When I speak from the perspective of art, it comes from a more abstract, timeless place. Harry Potter will remain long after JK Rowling is dead and whatever agenda benefits from her fame and fortune.

From the perspective of putting the IP holder and the current world affairs as the most important aspect, I get the importance of boycotting. It's just not the lens what I was speaking to.

Unless HP becomes some anti-trans icon...

I wonder if this is whats expected from something like, say, Lovecraft. Where everyone knows hes a horrible person but the influence is definitely there in many works today

its possible Rowlings influence could be around for the future in a similar manner but I dont know what her style would be considered

I always liked HP, but I was a diehard Forgotten Realms kid, and the Wizarding Worlds world-building has always been ass compared to straight-up D&D.

I have like, all the R.A Salvatore books. And a host of other ones. Still go back to them at times!

Lets see, keep in mind, this is from the actual review: story is awful nonsense, plotholes galore, there are constant bugs, some gamebreaking, the inventory management sucks, there are a bunch of spells but you can only use a few at a time and thats annoying, you fight the same handful of enemies, combat is thrilling, 9/10.

I really don't have a problem with this reasoning, in theory. Games are often more than the sum of their parts, and a game with lots of weird annoyances can still exude greatness overall. I've given high ratings to plenty of games here on GameFAQs that have some grating flaws if you decide to deconstruct them and break them down mechanically. It's the "overarching" experience that counts.

In any event, this Harry Potter game looks cool as hell and I'll be getting it for my kids.

On that note, I feel like a lot of people saying "This game looks bad anyway!" are undermining the boycott because if the game looks bad, of course nobody's going to buy it. And it would then fail because of the devs, and not because of Rowling. I get that they're probably trying to convince people "You don't really need this!" but I feel like people are going to judge that for themselves rather than listening to a stranger's opinion on the internet. The message should be "Don't buy this game, because it enables Rowling's transphobia against us."

this annoys me with boycotts, yep. Sometimes the thing is good, and then you're letting the bad guys reframe the debate to something they can win. Even if the thing is actually bad, it's still just a distraction from your moral cause.

Lovecraft's parents were a lot more racist than him. He still inherited some of it, but more in an "I believe this is what the world is like" way than an actively hateful way.

Minecraft definitely had the benefit of Notch being completely divested before he started his (publicly visible) bullshit.

So that's a pretty good comparison.

Isn't this largely the case with Rowling though? Pretty much every Harry Potter thing I've seen come out has made sure to say she's not involved and she wasn't even invited to the big reunion thing they did a year ago or so

There have been rumors that Rowling was not invited. According to Rowling, she was invited to attend the reunion.

No one said dont come, said Rowling. I was asked to do it and I decided not to.

That doesnt mean that Rowling isnt friends with some of the cast members. When asked if she is keeps in touch with the actors of the franchise, she replied Yes, I do. I mean, some more than others but that was always the case. You know, some I knew better than others.

Admittedly, it's according to Rowling, and she may very well be... misrepresenting actuality.

Yeah but she also seems desperate to not be irrelevant. Which is kind of how we got here in the first place.

it was probably more along the lines of Radcliffe & Emma Watson being vocally supportive of trans fans and not wanting to pal around with them now perceived as enemies. Same way she blocked Stephen King after he complimented her just because fans then asked him if he supports trans rights, he clarified that he still disagrees with her views on trans people even if he can be cordial out of that context - which was enough for Rowling to block him.

Big disagreement with this sentiment. All the time when people talk about J.K. Rowling, it's "Why does she need to remain the center of attention?" and "She could have sat back with her fortune and done whatever she wanted and been revered." This is her doing what she wants with her wealth and influence, the same way Bill Gates puts money into medical research. She's spending her political capital very deliberately and people should stop excusing that by rationalizing her actions.

I'm not sure how both can't be true.

Edit: I'm not saying she adopted her viewpoints just to stay relevant, if that's what you think.

Is that really the lens of art? There's countless works of art lost to history because no one bothered to record them, or maintain the recordings for centuries on end. HP could easily be one of those. As art it's super contemporary and super commercial, so it's easy to overestimate its impact.

Harry Potter has been massively successful for like twenty years now. It's honestly weird that it's barely showed signs of slowing despite the story being long over.

Contemporary/commercial art also gets remembered over 'high art' all the time. I don't really buy that argument.

THIS game is popular but I think the IP as a whole has slowed a good bit versus its heyday and am not sure what you mean

The love for the original story/setting has barely slowed, I mean. I actually blocked out Cursed Child and Fantastic Beasts from my memory lmao

I have no idea how TotK will do. It'll cleanly become the second best-selling Zelda, but I kinda doubt it'll get close (within 10 million copies) to BotW. I'll predict 15 million this year, which would be excellent and much faster-selling than BotW.

Theres a lot of potential 20 million+ sellers this year. TotK will likely come out on top but Spider-Man 2, Starfield, Diablo 4, Jedi Survivor are going to be huge as well. It must be said that even though Hogwarts Legacy will definitely be one of the highest selling games of the year, it will sell far fewer copies than the last Fantastic Beasts film sold tickets and that was a disappointment for the franchise. There is no denying that the series has lost a lot of popularity over the last decade. It just turns out that a fraction of really huge is still quite large.

Overall I think this just shows how big a deal IP is going to be for gaming going forward. In an environment where AAA games are all pushed to sell 10 million+ copies big IP licencing is seen as a way to help that. Its actually kind of wild that after the success of the Arkham games we didnt really see that many high quality AAA games using big properties until a few years ago. These kinds of games will become a lot more common soon.

Lastly I just want to say since it came up earlier, there are absolutely loads of people only talking about the game to upset people. Just look at the comments of any gaming site or channel that is not covering it. People love to tell you how much they like supporting transphobia sadly.

I doubt Starfield will do that well. Losing PS and XB1 hurts. Diablo 4 is an interesting one. I wonder how much 3 hurt the franchise
