This review has been going around because of how disparate the content of the review is from the score.

It reads like a 7 at best, if not lower, then it's like "fuck it, 9".

But people trying to say the reviews are biased are exactly the same as the Alt-Right trolls who said the last of us 2 reviews are biased

The IGN review makes the game sound like hot trash but then they just give it a 9 anyway because they like Harry Potter

You should actually READ the IGN review.

Lets see, keep in mind, this is from the actual review: story is awful nonsense, plotholes galore, there are constant bugs, some gamebreaking, the inventory management sucks, there are a bunch of spells but you can only use a few at a time and thats annoying, you fight the same handful of enemies, combat is thrilling, 9/10.

You are smoking some strong stuff if you think the text of the review + the score is somehow unbiased. If that high score is based entirely on their love of Harry Potterthats fine! But that is the definition of biased.

I really don't think the people campaigning against this game really care whether the game is good or not, lol.

I wouldn't buy this game if it was averaging 100 and objectively the best game ever made.

It's Harry Potter in 2023.

Do you want to make a general review topic? I was talking about all of them in aggregate.

I'm sure 9/10 is probably from someone who likes the source material, but I don't know if that is any more biased than someone who rates Fire Emblem a 10/10 because they love TRPGs

Also it's amazing to me that we still have people acting like paid reveiws are pure conspiracy theory on their face, when the most beloved gaming site on the internet exists *because* of a paid review debacle.

Obviously evidence is needed before people just claim any review they don't like has money behind it, but this stuff has already been laid out there before in the past.

And this review certainly reads like that.

The game doesn't actually look that great from the leaked footage, so the game is probably an 85/100 if you're a HP fan and a lot less than that if you aren't. That's just how licensed stuff goes though.

Oh reviews are certainly biased

Hype! Sorcerer's Stone for the PS1 was the shit and its crazy it took this long for someone to make a Hogwarts RPG

Id heard the combat was actually really good, but most of what youd see about the game is uh well all the stuff about the author and whatnot

Honestly this game kinda just reminds me of Fallen Order, which I just played and didnt really like but can see why others liked it

its probably an ok game that will get a little inflated because of its IP and sell a bunch of copies

If you don't read a review it's meaningless. Honestly, numbered reviews should just be eliminated entirely. Weed out the people who would get upset about it.

Except nobody is claiming the reviews are biased because J.K. Rowling is a TERF. They're saying the reviews are biased because the text doesn't match the score.

This is a scenario that doesn't exist. Even obscure games will get like 10+ reviews on metacritic. Reasonably popular games I'd be interested in will get 30+, 50+, 80+, and that creates a realistic average. It doesn't always line up 100% with my final view of the product, but as a tool for gauging interest? It's invaluable. I don't have the time to play everything in the world.

Aggregate scores tell you exactly what an aggregate score tells you, no more and no less, and I don't understand why people act otherwise

Reviews aren't meaningless, aggregate numbers are meaningless. Reviews serve an excellent purpose as long as you read them and take in the specifics, and see if the reason for their opinions match up with yours!

Wanting to get rid of numbers altogether is just a personal thing so that people will actually, you know, fucking read.

Anyway, I doubt this game is anything other than mediocre. It'll probably be fine, but I'm not certain I trust WB to publish a good video game in 2023. I'm still not especially confident this won't be another GT7-type situation once the game actually comes out, but it'll be nice if that's not the case. I will probably eventually buy it, but I will buy it used to "stick it to the man" or pirate it to "stick it to the man". I will, of course, judge it fairly on it's merits as a game because most game designers are good people and I'm not some weirdo who thinks JK Rowling actually has any involvement in this other than owning the IP. But it's totes cool if you just wanna avoid it altogether since there is a lot of baggage there and I would recommend not doing things if they make you feel bad.

Too much AAA map spam Ubi-esque trash is sitting at an 85-89 for this to speak to me at all.

Maybe I'm just too keyed into the industry and my own tastes though to have anything but animosity towards the 7-10 American gradeschool scale most of the review production machine uses.

The real issue with reviews is that reviewers are typically required to talk about shit they don't care about, at length, to meet standards of their publication. If the guy was just able to gush about how sick it is to finally play a competent HP game for the first time ever, nobody would care about the 9/10.

Ubisoft AAA map spam has a fanbase that loves it. Those reviews are meant for them. Not you. That's what I mean by knowing what you personally like. Complaining about Assassin's Creed 13 getting high reviews is like complaining about a horror movie getting high reviews when you don't like horror. And not all those games do well anyway - AC Valhalla has a 71 currently.

The 7-10 grade scale is a bit silly but the effect is largely overstated.

I only use metacritic to learn about new games tbh. I'll check out the top rated games to get an idea of things I haven't played. Oh and for guess the game, obviously.

I would have a lot of respect for a reviewer that just laid that out.

Fata Morgana has 10 reviews! Sure aggregates don't work great for extremely obscure games but them's the breaks. Steam review aggregates still work decently there.

There's currently 1 review on Metacritic for the Valkyrie Profile Lenneth re-release, lol.

Edit: wait, nevermind, just one on PS4, but 9 on PS5.

The platform split can get so silly at time. People really were traumatized by PS360 Bethesda games.
