Yeah, the headline is not news. "Health concerns" is click bait.

This, however, is news if true. "On deathbed" is absolutely relevant, as is "hospitalized." I mean, she's the queen. A lot of people will cry even if they never met her.

I do like her as queen compared to many of those who came before her. "British egoism" is a historical phenomenon that she didn't even come close to embodying, and that's why I don't like the British monarchy. I'm American, by the way, if that's not obvious.

I wish it were a joke, but it's probably serious. The media exacerbates the problem, but there's a disturbingly high number of people here who legitimately like the monarchy. I didn't realise just how many until the jubilee this year. That was bad enough, this time the sycophancy is going to be painful.

A woman who is almost 100 has "health concerns?" Shocking, I say. Being that old in itself is a health concern, the body naturally gets fragile with age.

Well, the linked page also has updates that reported on family members gathering on Barmoral. But yeah, on a somber note, I kinda expect this to be a thread on the updates on her condition and maybe even her passing.

I'm quite intrigued by the implications that her death would bring. I know there are people calling for the abolishment of the monarchy and her passing would certainly be a potentially pivotal moment, but I don't know how likely it actually is.

Yeah, a 96 year old woman having health concerns isn't noteworthy, but it's not like we see this headline all the time on her. Reading between the lines it's pretty obvious this is going to be the end.

People have parasocial relationships with celebrities and pseudo celebrities all the time

A guy I know irl went into a depressive episode because the author of his favorite manga died!

I was very young at the time, but I remember everybody going nuts about princess Diana. Granted, that was under more dramatic circumstances

I'm honestly assuming she already ate it.

I can say with experience that for some reason there's a huge chunk of people in the US who are full on Monarchy obsessed. Not in an "all hail the queen" sense, but they treat them like Hollywood celebs, like Prince Harry is Brad Pitt or something. They see the Queen dying the same as they saw Betty White dying.

I absolutely understand this when it's someone whose work has impacted your life and you feel a connection to them because of it... but the royals don't fuckin do anything, what is there to get attached to? Tax dodging? Inbreeding? Wealth hoarding? Representing the idea that some people deserve more than others because of their bloodline? Funding the legal defence of paedo relatives? Hell, even the Kardashians have that TV show so people can feel like they know them. I know people have been indoctrinated into this subservient attitude from birth but like... come on >_>

I think this is a little different, Miura's death was a huge deal not because of the person, but because of the work. Miura HAD no public presence, most people didn't even know what he looked like.

And it's not like it just effected a bunch of fanboys, professionals across just about every industry were devestated. I rememeber...Ono, I think, tweeting out that his life would never be the same as a specific example. There were thousands, though.

They see the Queen dying the same as they saw Betty White dying.
When Betty passed, I posted to Facebook "Why do people die?" Referencing her and John Madden, two people with whom I associate strong positive memories, passing within days of each other. I was sad, sure, but nothing I could have done.

I've honestly had worse reactions to Survivor blindsides when someone I really enjoyed was voted off, and that was more bad timing than anything else. I needed bright spots and losing one caught me off guard. If somebody I admired died suddenly and unexpectedly at such a time, I'd react the same.

But there are people - many of whom are in fine places in their life - who will be in tears over this who never met the queen and don't have actual positive associations with her. And it's not like this is too shocking given her age. There's no reason to act like your grandmother died (I'm still sad about losing mine, but it wasn't too much a shock since she was 99 y/o). Just be sad, play "God Save the Queen", and acknowledge there was nothing you could have done.

Like many of life's mysteries, the answer is simple: "ppl r dum"

This. Just look at the behemoth Twitch has become. I'm sorry, but if people can throw hundreds of dollars to people they don't know then a country can show concern for the health of their queen.

They actually tried something like that in 1969 with a documentary but the response
was pretty bad and it made them seem (even more) out of touch. Said documentary is now basically impossible to view on Buckingham Palaces orders for that reason.

Eh to be fair, to my understanding, the royalties get ample amount of coverage, especially in the UK. They are kind of state-sponsored reality TV stars.

And that's not to mention fictionalized versions of themselves, like in The Crown, The Queen, or Diana: The Musical.
