What is your favorite streaming service?

I think they all have their merits.

Netflix has pretty awful originals, but a decent sized catalogue and once in a while they'll put out a good original. Their anime subs are dog shit though.

Hulu is really only good for catching a show as it airs, it has lost its steam in recent years. Still some good titles though.

Disney+ has awesome originals and a great catalogue, but their schedules for originals is literally moronic because they feel the need to A. only run one show at a time and B. it sucks that they changed their release day from Friday to Wednesday.

HBO Max has an absolute stellar catalogue, probably the best, and has the most consistently good originals that are plentiful.

Amazon Prime Video has an alright acquired catalogue, but the UX is god awful. UI is terrible. Also they have GREAT originals, but they never seem to fucking air them! Seems like there's one GREAT original series a year and then they don't follow up on it for years. Also don't like how they'll hype up original movies then lock them behind a theatrical window for like a month before putting them on Prime.

Paramount+ is finally finding its groove, nothing special though, catch me when Avatar starts.

Peacock, don't have it, but I guess it just has The Office and an awful app.

Apple TV+, the one that nobody has and yet everyone on the internet talks about the shows on it. At the same time, never met a single person irl who has it.

Crunchyroll/Funimation. They're okay. I tend to only watch one or two anime series a year.

Good question.

I have access to Netflix, Disney, Prime and Videoland.

Of those, Prime is by far the worst (interface and controls)

Both Disney and Netflix have their issues, so it would depend on new entries at any given day.

I mean, Disney promised on of the best shows ever for January this year, but it is still not on Disney+ (here) and Netflix likes to add random seasons and movies, without putting up the prior and inbetween entries.

Amazon has started moving a lot of older shows and movies off Prime and onto IMDb TV, which they own. Prime Video is ad-free, IMDb TV is not.

Why isn't Youtube an acceptable answer?
I don't use any paid streaming service. I haven't found an argument for any of them. Ever.

out of those I guess netflix

but the only service that always has what I want available and will play in HD is iTunes. youtube has good selection too, but IIRC won't play HD without special hardware (possibly it works through the app though not sure).

Exclusive content. And the price for all you can watch for a month is on par with price of a movie ticket. So it's not a bad deal.

Except Cable has a way worse selection and doesn't give you the option to pick and choose what you want to pay at any given time

You don't have to be subscribed to every service all the time. If you let your account lapse, your queue will be saved for like 6 months at least

Cable actually does allow that - On Demand is a thing, and most cable services these days come with DVR where you can prerecord stuff to watch whenever with a little bit of forethought.

That being said, "worse selection" is always going to be subjective as hell.

On Demand isn't the same thing, it's in addition to what you already pay monthly. And yeah, subjective or not, there's way more good shit being released "exclusive" to streaming services than Cable "exclusive".

I don't have a favorite because each one has its advantages and disadvantages because like everything else in America, it all comes down to people wanting to make money by overcharging all while offering people less and less for their money and above it all, it's also about control.

Cable tv cornered the market by slicing the country into sections and then limiting customer choice so that people only had one option for cable tv and if you wanted it, you paid through to have it and then of course there's the annual rate hike in your monthly price but the service remained the same crappy service so then when streaming came along suddenly people were "cord cutting" and walking right back into the same greed model that cable tv had unleashed on people decades ago..

Yeah, still Netflix. Disney+ as a close second.

Prime don't have enough. I can easily see myself running out of things to watch there. And i don't even binge

HBO, Crunchyroll and Funimation suck from a technical point.

On Demand isn't the same thing

Just noticed you said "pay" there. I thought you say "play".

Because On Demand is definitely a service that "gives you the option to pick and choose what you want to play at any given time".

But I'd argue you mostly have the same option for cable to pay as well, considering you can add or drop certain channels depending on what you want out of the service, can arrange bundles, and if you're actually capable of communicating with other human beings, can haggle a bit with the account admin to give you discounts or deals. I have at least one friend who uptalked himself into a huge deal for cable because he just mentioned how he'd go with a different service if they didn't coddle him a bit. And another friend who periodically jumps back and forth between different services to take advantage of sign-up bonuses and deals.

Metalsonic66 posted...
it's in addition to what you already pay monthly.

Only if you're ordering PPV or renting shows/movies. There's still a fair amount of free content, depending on which channels you have.

In that sense, it's exactly like Netflix, Hulu, etc - pay a monthly fee, get content.

Metalsonic66 posted...
And yeah, subjective or not, there's way more good shit being released "exclusive" to streaming services than Cable "exclusive".

Which again, is incredibly subjective.

People can praise Netflix, but if you don't like any of the exclusive content, then it doesn't really matter in the slightest how exclusive it is. And no, the fact that YOU think certain shows are good doesn't mean everyone else is going to or should think they're good as well.

And to go back to the post you were originally replying to in the first place, exclusivity is a bad thing when you're dealing with two dozen or more streaming services, each of which has a couple good exclusive shows or movies, so you wind up paying hundreds of dollars a month to maintain them all, to the point where you're not really saving any money compared to what cable bills used to be. A vast content library doesn't mean much if you're not watching 99% of it. A dozen vast content libraries means even less if you're only watching a couple things out of any of them.

And being able to suspend or drop your streaming service to re-up it later really isn't much of a selling point, because the vast majority of people don't do that. The business model of most streaming services is basically built around retention, and the fact that most people will keep a service out of apathy/inertia once they've made the initial sign-up. So yes, there will absolutely be people spending hundreds of dollars a month so they can have Netflix and Hulu and Disney+ and HBO Max and Amazon Prime and so on in spite of barely using any of them.

So ultimately, the only real question that matters is "Regardless of what service you pay for, do you feel like you use it enough to justify what you're paying for it?" If the answer is yes, great. If the answer is no, then something needs to be reevaluated.
