Like, mild symptoms. low hospitalizations. no deaths.

Isn't this literally the best thing to happen to this virus in the past two years?

I mean it makes more sense for a virus to evolve into a less lethal form. If you keep killing your hosts you're going to die too.

It's actually the most common outcome for any virus that newly jumps species, and something people were predicting/hoping would eventually happen almost from the very beginning.

It's always been the hoped for arc - the virus mutates to be less virulent while people develop stronger immunity, eventually bringing Covid-19 more in line with other coronaviruses like the common cold or the flu.

The problem is more how many people have to die before you actually get to that point.

And right now, with Covid-19 the problem is not knowing the full extent of what long-term damage it's doing. Even a less lethal version might still do long-term organ damage or have other side effects that shorten lifespan or quality of life over time. So the best option is still going to be not getting it at all, and doing your best to stop spreading the damned thing.

We'd just better hope the omicron variant doesn't mutate again, or we might get the unicron variant:

That's the hope, but it's rarely so clear-cut, especially when you're dealing with something like Covid that is doing an exceptional job of proliferating despite being so deadly. The key thing viruses need to avoid is killing the host before they have an opportunity to spread. Killing hosts after the virus has been able to spread, however, is selectively neutral, since it has no impact on reproductive success, so becoming more or less deadly after transmission has occurred can go either way.

The best viruses are the ones that have mild to no symptoms and high spread potential. Not only will they be hard to test for, you will spread it but no one really notices it.

I will still be doing my part with a booster, wearing masks, and keeping things disinfected around me where I work or reside. Just because this appears, thus far, to be the most underperforming variant we are hearing about, it doesn't mean we are out of the woods - that our loved ones are safe from things getting worse.

I've already got my vaccine and booster, if this new variant is showing mild symptoms why the fuck is everyone freaking out so damn much?

Keep in mind that if you are vaccinated it lessens the symptoms of any Covid. Most of the people going into the hospital for Covid are not vaccinated and have other health issues.

The vaccine is not just about preventing you from getting Covid.

Do you genuinely believe that saving an estimated 10-15,000 lives a year in the US alone *isn't* worthwhile?

Dragooncancer_ posted...
if this new variant is showing mild symptoms why the f*** is everyone freaking out so damn much?

The jury's still out on just how much less dangerous it is, but beyond that, dodging vaccines means any immunity people get from being infected with it isn't necessarily going to help prevent infection from other variants, and in fact being infected may make people more vulnerable to secondary infection by another one. That also means it's going to spread very rapidly in regions that have relaxed their protective measures to account for vaccine protections, and even if those cases are relatively safe, that significantly increases the likelihood of seeing further variants emerge, all of which will have the same vaccine-dodging properties and some of which could be even more dangerous (especially if we get it hybridizing with Delta) because Covid's mortality rate is mostly selectively neutral (as I outlined earlier).

Omicron itself may not be that dangerous (though again, the jury's still out on that), but it has considerable potential to set us back by months and potentially develop into something much more serious. That potential alone warrants taking extra measures to try to keep it under control, though it's probably too late to actually stop it because it was already known to be circulating through several different countries before South Africa had the integrity to identify it.
