Ive asked before and Ill ask again since its been a while. What are some of you favorite battle types? Like which games had your favorite battle system. I personally liked Legend of Dragoon and Shadow Covenant (2, I think) While I just remember a spinning thing for Shadow Covenant 2, I remember Legend of Dragoons system very well I loved the additions. And being able to grow them. And getting the final one after mastering the others. And it was fun to use, too What are some of your favorite battle systems?

Origami King's was more enjoyable than Sticker Star's and Color Splash's but controllable partners and the badge/item variety make me prefer TTYD's combat. I do like that TOK makes you think more when it comes to 3 move battles and boss battles

ATB Chrono Trigger / FF6 is definitely the standard.
I actually enjoy the Dragon Quest system quite a bit as well.

I do also enjoy the strategy RPGs such as Final Fantasy Tactics, but way before that there were games like Shingen the ruler or Romance of the Three Kingdoms that I put more hours into than Final Fantasy Tactics.

I loved Legend of Dragoon's system overall. Even the items you had to spam a key to get the most damage out of which was neat.

I also really liked the one from another PS1 classic, Legend of Legaia. A bit lesser known, but still a great game. It was fun figuring out combos to link together and new moves at the time. Not skill-based like LoD but good.

RPGs specifically? Because I was going to say Bayonetta and other Platinum Studio games.

FFX-2 is a lot of fun.
SMT3: Nocturne is really good.
Tales of Vesperia, Innocence R, Hearts R, and Destiny DC are all a lot of fun. I'd say the Xillias but they each have a design choice in them that inhibits my enjoyment of the combat.
Perhaps a but meme-ish at this point, but Undertale has a really cool system.

Anything that's more than just select move like any Mario RPG's action commands. Despute it mostly being select move, just having to time a command for more damage makes it a lot more engaging. Also specifically the low numbers in the Paper Mario games makes damage boosting badges feel more meaningul.

Lisa: The Painful where some of the characters can input commands to do a move for more damage instead of just selecting the command.

Trails of Heroes has a grid-based battle system where positioning is a lot more important.

Not really the battle system itself but Atelier Iris had a bar where you could see not only who was going when but also when you were choosing an attack, where you'd be placed on the bar after that attack so it was a lot easier to plan things.

Also I've always hated that Final Fantasy's ATB system would only pause when selecting a spell when in think mode.

Admittedly there are some bosses where you have to wait out their defensive form but that's what Guard is for. ;)

Wait you turn is fine, as long as there is something different. Like another game where I like the battle system is Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE. Where you do the normal wait your turn. But if you hit an enemy with an attack they are weak to, you start a session attack. Which is just where your other characters can link attack so you can do a massive combo. And later on, this can include people not in the main party. And then, it can also include people who you can't even play as in the game. And later on, you get duo moves. And randomly, you'll get a chance to do a duo more after a session. And if you do on, the session can continue... Giving you a chance for an insane combo...

I definitely liked the Dragon Quest battle system the most. I also liked Final Fantasy X, since it felt like every party member had a purpose and it gave you time to come up with strategies and modify them on the fly depending how battles where going.

Not a popular opinion, but I HATE the ATB system that was popular in 90's JRPGs. It is the main reason most of them are not in my "favorite RPGs" list. It would have been fine if they had used shortcut keys for actions or slimmed the menus down like some non-Square ones did, but having to flip through menus to perform certain actions while a battle is progressing is not my idea of good gameplay.

Valkyria Chronicles also has a really good system as far as Strategy RPGs go.

The MMBN series (although not the mission system seen in MMBN5). Star Force was also okay.

For just normal combat, I liked LttP although that's overly simplistic. Can't think of much else offhand.

I just thought of another great battle system. Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2. The way elements interact with each other is fantastic. I forget that Fire doesn't explode Poison in most games which often disappoints me. Also the character customization is a lot more extensive than in a lot of other games.

divinity 2's really good, but how they handle some combat stuff l is pretty obnoxious in the base game (crowd control is TOO good and every fight comes down to permanently disabling everyone. and optimally, you only ever target one armor type; mixing damage types generally just makes fights riskier and take longer)

mods fix all that though

For turn based legend of dragoon is probably my pick as well. I have no idea why more people haven't ripped that off more effectively. You see small things here and there like lost odyssey attack ring but thats not nearly the same as the additions that make up the entirety of your attack and have cool animations and timings.

For action, I think Nioh 2 is the current peak. It's fantastic. Especially fists.

I won a lot of fights by setting the environment on fire or pushing crates from above. I would also move the crates as much as I possibly could before the battles to block off routes. That was really the only real way to win without somebody dying.

The graphics were cool for its time and it had an interesting battle system (honestly, I thought Legend of Legaia's battle system was more interesting on a conceptual level, but LoD's was more interactive). It probably would have been more of a mega-hit if not for FFVII since, at the time, everybody just drew comparisons to FFVII.

And it's worth noting that the combat mechanic is great, there were other issues with the battle system (iirc, character speed could be a game-breaker)

The story is kinda eh, but the gimmicks are neat.

the most powerful (but absolutely the most tedious) build in the game is just telekinesis + crate spam, you can one shot almost all enemies in the game with it. it sucks having to drag your super heavy crate everywhere but it makes stuff like killing dallis in early act 1 a breeze
