Do you think Logan is being a baby?

22 y/o Logan Hollar is fuming as the senior was BANNED from purusing his final semester at Rutgers University who said he was banned from even doing all online classes because he's not vaccinated!!

He is pursing his undergrad in PSYCHOLOGY from the Piscataway, New Jersey based public university who declined to get the vaccine because he's a healthy, athletic young man and DOESN'T trust the vaccine as he believes it is a gateway to SERIOUS LONG TERM HEALTH ISSUES!!

When Rutgers decided to mandate all students have a vaccine before returning, he was one of the ones who refused to do so and instead took his final year in all online in hopes of avoiding the shots.

Only those with medical or religious reasons can opt out after applying for an exemption but students who were enrolled in one of the school's remote online degree programs or online only continuing education programs didn't need to show proof of vaccination since they won't be on campus

But Logan is not part of any of those programs as he matriculated in the undergrad program that requires students to be vaccinated though he claims he was told that he could be exempt if he registered in all virtual

He says "I'm not in at-risk age group. I'm healthy. I work out. I have no fat whatsoever. I don't find COVID to be scary or all that serious to be honest and everyone is acting like this thing is going to kill everyone when there is a 99% survival rate. If someone wants to be vaccinated, that's fine with me but i don't think they should be pushed and i won't be hive minded to do it. When they put out the guidance in March, i was reading through all the verbiage which was if you plan to return to campus, you need to be vaccined. I figured i wouldn't be part of that because all my classes were remote."

He was enrolled in a system and managed to switch out of a class on Aug 6 without issue and filled out a survey about the vaccine. One of the questions asked was to check the box indicating that the vaccine mandate didn't appl to him since he would be studying from home, or so he thought.

He said after filling it out he got no pop up indicating he still needed the vaccine and thought he was all set but that was not true.

On August 27th, he logged in to try to pay his tuition but to his surprise he found out he was locked out of all his accounts and emails. He called the vaccine hotline and said he was told to get a shot before taking the class even if it was remote.

He sought answers from the school on why he has to get i even if he didn't intend to set foot on campus.

A representative said he could officially request an exemption which would take 2-4 weeks to be reinstated meaning he'd miss 3 weeks of classes at least since it starts on Sept. 1

He called back and was told they could not grant his waiver for anyone who had put it in past August 23 even though he was told he could get an exemption no problem on the 27th.

His stepfather, Keith Williams is also outraged and said "I believe in science. I believe in vaccines, but i am highly confident that COVID-19 and it's variants do not travel through computer monitors by taking online classes. I am vaccinated but he chose to remove himself from an on campus experience so he would not need to be. Now to be shut out and removed from his start of his final year is crazy"

Rutgers said their policy has not changed since it was announced in March and warned all students of their policy as registering for classes that are fully remote is not the same as being enrolled in a fully online degree granting program

99% of Rutgers student GOT the vaccine as hollar is one of the rare students who did not as an exemption takes up to a month before they grant exemption status

Hollar said if given the choice to get the vaccine or switch universities he would do the latter because he finds it concerning that the vaccine is being pushed rather than his own doctor and now he'll transfer and said "I don't care if i have access to campus. I don't need to be there. They could ban me. I just want to be left alone. I will never let these people tell me the vaccine is safe when i know it is not"

LinkPizza posted...

In terms of presence on campus, there isn't one, but it does change how the registration is handled at the back end. Many universities offer fully-online degree programs intended for distance ed, and you'd register for one of those when signing up for the university. If you register for a regular program, then just don't end up signing up for any in-person classes, you're still registered in the regular program, which presumably is what flagged him for expulsion when he failed to meet the vaccine requirement for enrolment.

In truth, he should probably have been able to transition into an online degree program, and probably actually would have been able to if he'd taken the initiative to change it instead of assuming he'd be fine because his courses were all online. But I can understand flagging unvaccinated students at a program level instead of a course level for the sake of simplifying the administrative side of things, especially where people pick up and drop courses so often (and people in online-only programs would be completely prevented from picking up in-person classes, rendering the issue moot).

Both things are completely untrue. First, businesses don't have the right to refuse service for any reason they want (which, quite honestly, they SHOULD have). Second, and more importantly, Rutgers is a state school so it's a part of government rather than a private business and thus regulated differently anyway.

By the sounds of things, he was registered for an in-person program, then just didn't sign up for any in-person classes. The university only exempted people that were registered for online-only programs, applying the vaccine requirement on the basis of program registration instead of course registration (which makes sense because it's pretty easy to change courses with little notice). It sounds like he assumed he'd be fine without changing anything even though students were warned that just taking online classes doesn't count as being in an online program, and then he wasn't.

He may have, but the school's administration has no way of knowing that that's his plan, nor of being able to verify that he's sticking to it. In truth, they would be similarly in the dark if he were registered as an online-only student, but at least in that case his choice to register that way makes it clear that he doesn't plan on going in.

Ultimately, this seems less like a vaccination issue and more an issue of a student assuming bureaucracy would work in his favour without any effort on his part, which is a classic mistake for many students. That's really the lesson he should be taking away from all of this.
