Freedom Phone claims that it can protect users from the data collection that comes with an iOS or Android operating system (it has something called a FreedomOSwhich, ironically, just appears to be a modified version go Googles Android OS).

Not sure if that's a typo or if it means something. Given Gizmodo's "journalism" -- as evidenced throughout the rest of the article -- it could be either.

Either way, any person promising a phone that can circumvent the Biden regime's invasive spying practices -- the same systems employed by Obama and carried over by Trump -- is either a liar or a fool. You'd have to do more than just change the phone, you'd need to have a different carrier.

That said, given the government's shocking crackdowns on free speech -- where senators first strongarmed social media platforms then coerced services to drop alternatives to those platforms -- I can understand why some people *might* find the option attractive, but it doesn't really win you any more privacy. If it's using US networks you're still fucked. You'd really either need a provider that tells the US's fascist bureaus to fuck off (which I doubt you're going to have, because the government wouldn't them operate in the space unless they agreed to hand over customer data) or some way of routing everything through the internet with a VPN. The phone itself is just the endpoint, the real issue is the networks which have shown a shocking eagerness to march in step with the government's scariest agencies.

The branding is dumb, but the design of the phone itself in regards to the OS, apps and whatnot is a step in the right direction.

It's a 110 dollar phone from Alibaba with an old version of Android installed. Also it has an app store that "doesn't ban apps" so presumably just full of malware lol

Just saying, maybe trusting someone else to give you a 'secure' phone isn't the safest plan.

Based on photographs from the company website a number of Internet sleuths identified that the device has the same form-factor, shape, and appearance of a Umidigi A9 Pro, said Hickey, via email. This device is a drop-shipped customizable Android-based phone that can be ordered from ASIAPAC region and customized to a projects requirements, he said, clarifying that such devices can be bought and shipped in bulk with custom logos and branding so as to give the appearance of a phone that has been designed for a unique purpose but is actually just a common cheap Android-based smartphone with core components produced in Taiwan and the surrounding areas. Its also very cheap: the A9 Pro is currently available for about $120, much less than the Freedom Phones $500.

Making a less secure phone from both a hardware and software standpoint is moving in the right direction?

It's also ironic that while Erik Finman's rallying cry for the phone on twitter is the need to fight censorship from big tech, he's hiding any reply that criticizes the phone.

I'm not even sure I'd call that ironic. Irony is something that goes against expectations. Republicans being hypocrites whenever it works in their favour and/or they think they can get away with it is exactly what we expect them to do.

A major medical device company I used to work for was going to use a $50 Chinese Smartphone with a history of having Chinese backdoor as a controller for a specific thing I probably can't talk about because it was the cheapest on the market.

Never underestimate stupidity.

Actually, because you were so easily to predict this, any severe recalls/lawsuits happen recently?
Just curious. First time I have opened my mouth about this company. I'd feel kinda guilty going on diabetes subreddits to do any research on how they're doing as at one point I had intimate knowledge of how their software/hardware works.

What kind of genius actually thinks that China is not remotely capitalist?

But, since we're on the subject, let's make a RELEVANT call-out. HEY, you lefties who like to scream against capitalism and rich peopled, why are you such huge participants in a capitalist economy? Please write your complaints on social media on your 1,000$ phone while drinking your Starbucks soy-flavored latte.

For the small period of time I worked with Dexcom for a collaboration (it was around the time the G5 was being developed so this was a long time ago) they had a good head on their shoulders. Never at any point during the 2 years I worked at Insulet did I feel they had any remote idea what they were doing, and they'd actually fire people that I felt did.

Just to put into perspective, I was was one of the main contributors to the Dash Pod (The PDM was handled by a separate team of mainly H1Bs... talk about quality engineering). I have no idea how the product has changed since then, but I will never forgive any of their management for treating me like actual trash. R&D is a cost center in that environment and I really doubt that has changed.
