shan was the star of the season and i'm sad to see her go - weirdly feels kind of like a rupert-in-pearl islands exit where i'm left wondering where the season goes from here
and possibly it's akin to sandra taking the win down the homestretch with ricard (admittedly, this is what i'm rooting for)

their dynamic was a blast and that was a great episode - for all the toys and trinkets this season has tried to dole out, they haven't played a huge part in much of anything so far, which is for the show's benefit i think

i really do think it has to be ricard or deshawn though. xander's edit since the tiffany boot has been "gonna scrap close to the end but fall short" and erika was just invisible far too long to really be a threat. i'd almost say liana has a shot if she can somehow sneak through everyone else but i think i'm reaching there

but she was definitely the lynchpin of a ton of different relationships here, and it's gonna be a big deal where all the pieces fall next week

If it weren't for the ham-fisted cramming of too many twists into the early parts of the game (most of which thankfully haven't done much), I kinda think we'd be talking about this as a potential top 10 season.

I have to wonder, when was the last time the season's indisputable main character was eliminated this far ahead of the finale? It has to be Pearl Islands, right? Even in DvG, Christian was the last pre-finale boot, and his status as the season's "main character" wasn't quite as indisputable as Rupert or Shan.

This is my thought as well.

This cast delivers. And yet production keeps getting in the way with bogus shit that ends up doing nothing but wasting airtime. In lieu of those, we could've gotten more time with Luvu, which would've made this season even better.

The hourglass twist is still incredibly unfair and is the first time Probst outright lied to the cast. You don't punish challenge winners like that. If an ORG host did that, there'd be a mass walkout.

I'm glad I went and watched this episode because it was a massive improvement from the Sydney boot.

I really thought early on that even if not Shan we'd get a female winner this season but I think those odds are pretty well dashed given the female edits we have left. It's gonna be really uncomfortable having our seventh male winner in a row though.

Going over everyone left:
Erika: Was only a central character when the story around the magic hourglass made her relevant. However, she did receive some winner-ish confessionals with the "wolf in sheep's clothing" stuff and her being the only one to iterate her strategy on Luvu, even if it backfired. I don't think she's overall complex enough to be the winner but as far as "Natalie White" type edits are concerned, she's the best candidate. Definite dark horse.

DeShawn: Probably the best pick right now. We got some idea of who he was in episode 2 despite his lackluster premiere, and he's clearly playing the hardest. The only kink is whether or not Shan will come around on him when he explains that he did that because she was throwing his name out there and that Shan/Liana had betrayed The Campout first.

Ricard: Likely the second-best pick right now. Shan saying she'd vote for him on her way out may have exacerbated his target, in addition to his challenge dominance. He's clearly one of the best players right now but making FTC may prove to be a struggle for him.

Heather: She's too purple overall for me to see her winning, and if they do a shock "Surprise!" and then retell the entire story in the finale of how she was really running shit the whole time, the entire season is invalidated in an even worse way than EOE was.

Xander: He smells like either the final pre-finale boot or the Fallen Angel. I really can't see him ending up anywhere else because we've gotten a good insight into his game and personality but haven't gotten any serious character development beyond that.

Danny: Really articulate and surely would dominate at an FTC, but I don't think he's been present enough edit-wise. He may get marked as a threat for that reason, but he's playing a good low-key game and I see him, like Erika, as a dark horse.

Liana: The goat on AstroTurf. Her arrogance is gonna get her.

I love being this confused - makes Survivor more fun for me, so long as things make sense.

The person who finishes last in the challenge has to flip a coin. If favorable, they *MIGHT* (not sure of this) win immunity too. If unfavorable, they're out of the game entirely (thus undermining the entire point of Survivor being a social game). I believe people can choose to sit out of the challenge if they don't want to risk it, but in doing so they can't win immunity. Would be epic if the entire cast said "fuck you and your twists, Jeffrey" and everyone except Xander sat out, and thus Xander won by default xD

What should be a very pivotal vote in the game is instead possibly not a vote, and the person who should be going home may end up immune for finishing last in the challenge.

I appreciated that tribal council. Having the players openly and honestly discuss matters of race in our society felt raw and real, and was just appreciated. It's a bit fucked up to hear Jeff say "This is why I love this show", as though he hasn't been pimping a plethora of game changing twists forever and a day. Also, having this raw, real moment, right before Deshawn has to survive a game of chance. >_>

Also completely off topic, but I'm gonna mention a comment on YouTube that I saw. Does Jeff really have to consistently break the fourth wall like it's an episode of Dora the Explorer?

I do kinda like the foursome of Xander/Ricard/Erika/Heather. It's the perfect synthesis of a group of misfits that powered their way to the top. Mainly cause of Xander and Erika, but Ricard has grown on me slightly and Heather is just a meme lol.

Man I don't know what to think anymore. This Survivor episode (and the season as a whole) had some of the highest highs and lowest lows of the post-Game Changers era (S39 garbage notwithstanding). The twist was garbage of course. I really thought it was going to be either Danny or Erika and they would lose, because getting twistfucked would explain their minimal pre-merge edits.

Over the last few weeks I was really beginning to think that Liana had overstayed her welcome and I was getting a bit tired of her but she ended on a high note.

But really, this season's highs are phenomenal, but the lows are super low and really dragging it down.
