Hmm... it got me into the franchise, and there's that really good twist to hook you in early. But none of my fav cases are here, and it's a bit rough around the edges at some points... The characters are still very fun though, I'll give it a 7.

It's a thrill ride from the end of 1-3 Day 2 on, and the character writing is so strong. You don't even realize the game is telling a cohesive story about Phoenix and Edgeworth until the end of 1-4.

I'm not the biggest Ace Attorney fan, but it was actually more the gameplay that bothered me. That said, case 3 was a drag on all fronts.

Overall better than Justice and Apollo but not quite as good as Trials, Dual and Spirit.

Also Case 1-5 really hurts the game on replays. My god is the beginning and middle part of that case such a slog. This is a classic issue of length is an issue only if it is boring considering how 6-5 is one the best cases in the series.

Im gonna count this as an 8.5 if thats okay, because most versions include 1-5. I wonder if I should include a rate the best version you have played qualifier to account for cases like this and older games that got ports with better scripts or translations.

8 for me. It's more disjointed than later games in the series, but each individual case works well, with 1-4 and 1-5 being the clear standouts.

I really like the gameplay in Ace Attorney. Really great mechanics loop for a story-driven adventure game and it gets you solving the mystery along with the characters. The game works beyond just the story.

In terms of nominations, I have to ask a stupid question: How, if at all, are people differentiating between the story and the writing? I could see nominating something like Portal, but Portal doesn't really have a story. What it has is lots of witty dialogue built around a premise.

Yeah, it's a difficult distinction to make. I'm not sure how I'd rate something like Portal.

yeah i'm gonna avoid rating this game solely because i can't really separate the execution from whatever the "story" itself means

Story, for me, can be boiled down to three criteria: 1) Narrative - whether or not the events move from one scene to the next in a satisfying way - 2) Characterization - how a writer gets players emotionally attached through characters dialogue and 3) Resonance - does the experience make a lasting impact on the player by challenging them to think critically about a theme / philosophy / question etc.

A lot of games might have good characters, but there's not a narrative arc, or a game might have good flavor text/world building but no real characters. So score accordingly. It's all subjective anyway so I don't care if someone wants to give Portal or Mario Odyssey a 10/10, even though both of them would probably get 6's in my book.
