It just seems like when I say thank you after an order, they are just much nicer afterwards. Like that made their day. I thought that was common courtesy.

I never worked fast food so I dont know.

I once saw a woman in an SUV flip her entire shit when a coupon for a free Big Mac got turned down because the location wasn't eligible.

I was in the car behind her, and I just suddenly see the whole SUV start bouncing and swaying. I heard some muffled words, so I rolled my window down to listen.

The woman in the SUV was screaming, at the top of her lungs, over and over again: "I'm a baller, you a worker, BITCH!!" just going absolutely nuts. I must have heard her say it fifteen times before she screeched off at 30+mph from the parking lot.

So uh... No, I expect they don't get thanked often enough.

When I worked bojanglea sone of them hid their tips to me. Way that bojangles operated customers left their trash on the table and some would hide money under the tray they left on the table and they'd tell me as they walked out. Usually just like a dollar but on Christmas eve I got a 20 dollar tip for what was probably a 6 dollar meal

One of the first things I noticed when I came to the UK is no one says thank you to bus/taxi drivers, delivery people, fast food workers etc

nor do they tip

I think it's a culture thing

More cynical , meaner cultures don't do it

Happier more open and friendly cultures are polite

i only say thanks if someone is going above and beyond. If you're getting paid to do your job, i shouldn't say thanks to you for doing the thing and I don't expect anyone to thank me either unless I was exemplary. I want it to mean something and not just a convo fluff. Although where I live the culture is different, busy life here people are just trying to get on with their day.

Picture it this way: you are working the front. You deal with customers all day who are rude, who are abrasive, who are loud, who have no manners. You get yelled at, you get told off, all over stuff you have no control over.

Then you hear someone say 'thank you' and be absolutely pleasant.

It really helps. It's a small thing that takes no energy and no real emotion, but feels nice when a customer shows appreciation for. The smallest extra effort makes me want to put the extra effort in.

Sure, they're doing their job, but it's nice to feel like you're doing something and hear kind words.

A thank you literally costs nothing man. Being pleasant to someone shouldn't be done as a fucking reward, it should be normal.

Being stingy with thank yous so that they have more power is a funny concept to me. I get that argument with "I love you", but jt doesn't translate. People just reasonably think you're an asshole when you don't use manners. And if you finally do, it's just like "oh, I guess they're not an asshole all of the time".

This, but I was raised in the South. Residing in the Northeast now, it certainly does not seem the standard. I pretty much couldn't imagine an interaction with a cashier that doesn't end with me making eye contact and saying thank you.
