I don't think I've spent 50 hours on any game I didn't enjoy, I put things down well before that point if I'm not interested. Maybe the answer would be some shitty game I played as a kid objectively. Gunbound?

Fighters Destiny probably got to 50 hours all told. Or Army Men Sarge's Heroes. Maybe Street Hockey 95.

Though real answer is probably an old Apple 2 or early PC game from when I was a little kid and had few options. Like Matterhorn Mountain or something.

I was consumed by the sunk cost fallacy to the point of insanity
It was so insane that if for some reason I found myself waking up in the night (to pee or whatever) I would use this opporunity of 5 hearts to farm Meowth and go back to sleep

That was even more ridiculous than to wake up for SMFFFC

Probably FFIX. I pretty much 100%ed it in terms of content-- it was a different time and using current day mindset I would probably not even get through it. I didn't get every item or anything but yeah.

League of Legends would be the game I most regret putting as much time to as I did, but FFIX is a worse game.

Not that FFIX is horrible. 4/10 game probably. But I tend not to put a lot of time into mediocre games.

The game is not good.

Repetitive and boring missions
Embarrassingly bad storyline and characters.
Terrible LAW system.
Uninspired map and mechanics of a poor poor man's Final Fantasy Tactics.

My hatred for the game runs even deeper than having put so many hours into it because I actually expected something faithful to the original FFT.

I was pretty let down by FFIX. Its current reputation is that of an underrated gem, but when I played it it felt like a slog compared to VII and VIII.

I probably criticize it more than I praise it, and I actually like the game. It has extremely apparent flaws, so I don't know why people are stunned someone might hate it. It'd be like me being surprised someone said they hated FFVIII!

On a related note, I am pleasantly surprised no one has said FFVIII yet, although you can beat it in way under 50 hours, so maybe that's why!

I love FFIX but it is definitely the weakest one from the golden era of Final Fantasy (FFVII-X).

I imagine it is the slow battle speed that is a huge turn off for current players otherwise the game has aged very well. Overall gameplay is such a step back from the greatness of VII and VIII though.

The game has issues beyond a bad battle system.

Aesthetically IX is much, much better than VII and VIII, but it is pretty tough to go back to. I would praise it more for standing out from what I felt was a bland direction the series was going in (to this day I just don't jive with Nomura), but that's just about it.

And I mean they all suck compared to Tactics, so.

Like what? The plot being too childish at times? I think the writing is still one of the very best. I still replay this game time and time again (not nearly as much as VII and VIII) and apart from the battle speed it holds up really well.

Well I know I've spent more than 50 hours on FFVIII. Not by a lot but I did play through Disc 1-2 twice which is enough to put it over.

Better game than FFIX because the system is fun to break if nothing else. Also the plot has higher highs when it's actually good. Slightly worse lows than FFIX but I think it's just cause I was expecting better when FFVIII hits you with bad stuff

Honestly you combine the plot with Disc 1 and early Disc 2 and the mechanical depth of Disc 3-4 and you actually have one of the best FF games. Alas.

Half the playable cast is irrelevant, which is a big one for me. Zidane is probably one of the weaker FF leads, too, although I do still quite like him.

It has a plethora of awful mini-games, too.

Hmm it's up there for me, but it really can't compare to Pokemon Shuffle and Pokemon GO
And I am not sure I played it for 50 hours (how long does it usually take to get to the moon ?)
Most of my hate comes from me probably not playing the game correctly so maybe I will need to give it another chance someday
But also people said that the real meat of the game is Triple Triad and...I am not really a fan of card games

How was it going to a bland direction when literally every game in the series is so different from one another? (especially after FFVI)

It is this aspect of the FF games that makes it my favorite series in video games even though its latest ventures have been a noticeably lower in quality.

If you're just trying to beat the game and you don't get sidetracked by Triple Triad or being a completionist, you could probably beat FFVIII in 35ish hours no problem.

Because the characters were starting to look more and more like regular people in regular clothes which is the exact opposite of what I want. Like, there are some that standout more than others, but VIII in particular just has very bland character designs IMO. Selphie (background NPC tier here, holy shit how is this a party member), Irvine, Quistis, Rinoa, all just super boring. Zell stands out a teeny bit but I just don't like his look. Squall as the lead has the cool jacket but without that who gives a fuck?

I see the style of VIII as a forebearer of the style of XV, which is aesthetically the worst game in the franchise, just not for me in the absolutely slightest.

Tetra Master sucks ass yes especially coming right after Triple Triad but Chocobo Hot n' Cold is the best Chocobo related side quest/mini-game in the series' history.

I'm purposely ignoring Hippaul Racing and Jump Rope.

Chocobo Hot n' Cold might be the best chocobo related side quest but that's not high praise considering the competition is stuff like FFX's dumb chocobo racing or FFVII's needlessly drawn out chocobo breeding.

I mean they're both drawn out but I think the reward cycle is slightly better than chocobo breeding-- that's literally the only reason I'd give it a slight nod.

Chocobo Hot & Cold is the one popular FF mini-game I don't get the love for. It's inoffensive and straightforward, so it's fine, which probably makes it seem like gold compared to the rest of the stuff FFIX makes you do, so maybe that's it.

Nice to see some people defending Suikoden 3 here. (Most people would say Star Ocean 4 or 5 is worse than FFTA but I liked those games, especially Star Ocean 4 is my favorite of the series. And I have played all five of them)

Mini-games shouldn't be held accountable for a game's quality in any capacity though. You do them if you wanna do them.

Only FFX forces it upon you for powering up the Celestial Weapons which IMO is the game's biggest blunder.

Reasons I don't like FFIX

The molasses battle system, while glaring, is not remotely the only problem with the gameplay, as the battle system has a lot of bad mechanics on top of that. Trance being uncontrollable is the worst. Items giving abilities is annoying cause you need to equip subpar items for way too long to get techs. Steal's success rate being like 1% is also awful. These two have an unholy union of suck on top of that with steal being the best way to get a lot of items. This is the worst leveling system in the series by far-- FFII has nothing on it. It's also got like no customization or choices to make when training your characters, just go down the road of equipping your item that you don't have a skill for-- this is a somewhat welcome change as you could argue FFVII and FFVIII were skewing it too far in the customization direction, but having none (arguably even less than FFIV due to your gear choices being made for you) is bad too.

Outside of Vivi and Kuja the characters just aren't very interesting or good. They're for the most part written in a one dimensional way (which can be fine, if you like the personalities-- I find the majority of the cast actually annoying which makes this worse) and then have character development wedged into them (which ultimately hurts the characters) when it suits where they want the story to go. You're Not Alone and Dagger Can't Concentrate are so bad, feel so forced.

Amarant is actually my second favorite playable character in the game because he just stays out of all the bad "character development" going on by just being completely irrelevant to anything. Amarant represents me, the player. I, similar to him, get no screentime and am completely disinterested with what's going on and just want the game to be done with.

The plot is fine, passable, and the setting is actually interesting. But if the characters are bad and the combat system is bad, what am I even playing it for.

Maybe 4/10 was too nice the more I think about it the more of a 3/10 this game feels. But at the same time it's not really BAD it's just... there are so many better options out there.
