We have a screenshot of him from 2013 telling a fan that was one month away from 18 that they'll be doing some shows in their town the next year. And then we have the consensual sexting exchange from four years later (2017). That's it.

It's a long shot to call this "grooming" behaviour. It would be different if this began when she was much younger, or if he was an authority figure, or if there was some more solid evidence of manipulation. As it is now, we just have a screenshot of him responding to her contact with no apparent intent, him wishing her a happy birthday a month later, and then the explicit stuff from four years later.

Uh...he had online interactions w/ them for a while. If he slept w/ them, even by their allegations, it was once they were adults.
Seems like a massive reach to call that "grooming". That's usually either when the attempt for a physical relationship is when they're still underage, or if the alleged groomer was a major influence in the victim's life, like a parent, sibling, mentor...

Seems like his "crime" is ghosting them after the affairs and they're bitter about it.

I'll agree 100% that's it's pretty creepy, as well as very rude to ghost people like that. I don't think I'd ever date anyone more than like 5 years younger than me (I'm 28).

But at the same time, there's nothing illegal about it, and the entire encounter was consensual and reciprocated. I've seen people elsewhere claim concerns about "power dynamics", but that does not apply here since he by no means was in a position of power or authority over them.

The legitimate focus of people's outrage is either on the age gap (which is creepy, I'll agree) or on the ghosting (which is shitty, I'll agree). Neither of which are enough to be damning. Again, if more evidence surfaces, I'll reevaluate this.

Side note, @JigsawTDC is awfully silent. I guess the answer to his question "what the fuck is wrong with you" is "I actually read all the evidence and didn't get clickbait mad like everyone else".

He might not have official power over them, but there definitely is a dynamic between popular figures and their fans that can be problematic. Some fans might fuck them because they want access, not out of genuine attraction. You could argue the scuminess of that can go both ways though and it's not really clear if that's what happened here

Also I want to point out that friendly innocuous behavior isn't evidence against grooming, it's a hallmark of it. That doesn't mean that everyone being nice in that way is insincere, but building trust is by definition part of what grooming is. Again not really clear what the case is here since it's pretty much impossible to know his intent

Even if stars, athletes, etc, had been grooming minors "for decades" (which I find hard to believe because prior to social media there wasn't the same access afforded to offenders), that's not really an excuse and it's even shittier when you consider the guy is basically a children's entertainer (albeit a c-list one).

The Internet tends to confuse the idea of "position of power" (ie, wherein one person is literally in an authoritarian position over someone, either as an employer, teacher, etc) with the idea of "power imbalance" (wherein one person is more famous/influential/popular or has more money than someone else). This is mostly because people online are stupid.

A lot of people online also tend to throw the word "grooming" around way more than is warranted, because they don't actually understand what words mean.

Which is kind of a shame, because by overusing those sorts of terms in incredibly sensationalist and inaccurate ways, it kind of devalue them in situations where they actually DO apply. People start getting desensitized to the usual rhetoric, and start to view it as a sort of Boy Who Cried Wolf scenario, and thus stop caring, even in cases where actual grooming is occurring or where someone is actually exploiting a position of power to coerce unwilling compliance.

I think it's a quite a blurry line. Did anyone else see Chris D'Elia's comeback video? He talked about sex addiction, cheating on his partner - noting he had a problem. Not a fan of the guy these days regardless, but I do commend him on making it a conversation in a better way than a dipshit denier like Cuomo.

I don't know the details on the guy being discussed in the topic, but I do think celebrities/people in a position of power (oops I said it) do need to realize when they're treating people like disposable sexual meat-puppets. If there's a pattern, it's worth taking a look at. There are definitely other celebrity playboys out there that don't get a sudden pile of complaints against them.
