People like Hela in Thor: Ragnarok compared to most other movies, because she counteracts all of the humor in the movie. It's not so much she's an outstanding villain as it is that she brings stakes to a movie.

Thor: Ragnarok is amazing. Probably my most watched movie and IMO the second mass-appeal movie after GOTG1. I can recommend Thor: Ragnarok to any of my friends and I know it'll be a good time.

She hams it up but she doesn't do it in a very Rita Repulsa like way at all.

You can have a villain in a silly movie be played completely straight even if they have a layer of schlock on them because that's how the movie operates. That's what she is. And she does it great. Never feels like a joke villain at all.

she does to me. she hams it up so much, i found it impossible to take her seriously.

and that's not even my problem - like, it's thor ragnarok. this isn't the kind of movie that needs a super serious villain. i just found her overacting to be super annoying.

Strong disagree. A villain that isn't super serious would ruin the movie for me. This is why she's a huge contrast from Rita Repulsa who is never a credible threat to begin with.

You need stakes somewhere. That's what she's there for. If she is done in a more boring way you basically get Ronan the Accuser who is such a nothing part of the appeal of GotG. If she is done in a less serious way you get Ultron again. She basically perfectly threads the needle between being serious and having charisma, something only Loki (who is cleanly ahead of Hela as a villain don't get me wrong) and at an extreme stretch Ego have been able to do in the MCU really. Obidiah, Thanos, Vulture, Killmonger and Alexander Pierce work well on the pure serious end but I don't think they fit the tone of Ragnarok well.

She reminds me more of a Chong Li from the Van Damme classic Bloodsport than a Rita Repulsa. Like yes, similarly to Ragnarok, the movie itself is ridiculous and Bolo overacts the hell out of what he's doing, but Chong Li straight up murders people and is not presented as a joke at any point.

It's got a lot of jokes but I felt like the overall stakes in the film are pretty high overall. Taika blends humor and seriousness very well IMO.

Also Blanchett probably did the best acting job amongst villains in the series, she's definitely the highest talent of the lot (Ok I like Michael B and Redford but yeah) and she probably did more to shed the plot armor than any villain not named Thanos (Killing all of Thor's friends and his dad, making Asgard uninhabitable, and even taking Thor's eye out)

I do agree with this to an extent.

XIII's beef of making a joke of Asgard blowing up is my main problem with the movie (but it's just one scene-- I'm not gonna dock it too much for just that) and the only time I feel it really goes too far with not knowing when to turn it off. On the similar note Hela maybe dunked a bit too hard on Asgard too, but eh, I think they played off that well in later movies.

The destruction of Asgard was also one of those "we need to reduce a credible resistance to Thanos before Infinity War" things. Especially with Thor having been researching the dude.

Nah, I'd say Iron Man 3 and the Ant Mans/Captain Marvel are probably more polarizing.

Guardians 2 is probably just a vocal minority as its reveal is going to show.

Captain Marvel is polarizing, but rarely in rankings of mcu films from what ive seen. But ya its polarizing for the girl power stuff or what not.

Iron Man 3 is a good choice for polarizing for sure as well due to the Mandarin mostly.

Ant mans i think most agree they are just "there". I dont know too many who put them in the top tiers of MCU films. Maybe im wrong on that though.

Ya maybe Guardians 2 just has a very local minority of complainers.

That'll come up in my write-up.

GotG2 was not good on first watch, but that's because it has some bad humor and stupid plotlines. What it does well, it does really well, and it's easier to look past the bad stuff the second time and focus on the good.

It has the single worst bit in the MCU though.

Eh I understand people having that mentality, but it's just not one I can get behind myself. If a certain part is really bad or takes away from the movie too much it's really hard for me to stay invested and that's when a movie really fails for me. But hey that just boils down to preference.

I will say that, regardless of where it places, GotG2 has really livened up this ranking. For the most part, the rest of the list has been mostly "This should go out right about now", followed by that movie going out a within the new few spots. Maybe Iron Man went out a little early for some people, but others were predicting its elimination around the midpoint, and there it was. GotG2 has been predicted since around 19th place and is now in the final 6, so at least it kept things interesting.
I haven't predicted GotG2 a single time yet, but after this post yesterday, I was thinking it was made with a slight fakeout at GotG2 not being the next one, but the one after. So I'm going to guess GotG2 for the first time now, to be 5th place.
