It's because all things equalized, being taller IS an advantage over short men with there being some diminished returns as humans are only designed to be so tall and after a certain point it has anatomical issues (bad knees, etc.).

1. There is a correlation between height and speed. The fastest man on the planet is 6'5" and most Olympic sprinters are 6'+. I was the fastest person on my track team at 6'2" and most guys who were on the relays were 6'+, I think one guy was 5'11" which is still statistically above average and definately not short.

2. Tall people have long arms which has proven to be a substantial advantage in boxing and is an even bigger established advantage in most sword based martial combat sports.

In sword fighting, I'd give the edge in combat to a skinny tall guy over a short buff manlet all day every day. Range advantage is real and was even more real pre-gun powder era.

3. Tall people have taller frames which naturally gives them higher body weight and more frame to put on muscle. Weight lifting has allowed short guys the ability to overcompensate for their height and lift harder than taller guys to overcome this disadvantage, but for most of history weight lifting isn't a thing so if two guys don't lift, the one with the naturally larger frame is more likely to be larger.

And again, all things equalized, most body builders and power lifters are reasonably tall so if you have two guys who are capable of putting on muscle, the taller one still would have the advantage due to having the bigger frame. Most strongmen are 6'+ with most being much taller with Eddie Hall at 6'3", Hafthor at 6'9", Brian Shaw 6'8"...

Being tall has legitimate physical advantages over being short. Most world class athletes are tall for a reason.

Like, it eliminates certain positions, and making eye contact or kissing seems pretty impossible if the height difference is too much.
