Sometimes as a couple they look worse when the disparity too great between them. Even a guy the same height can pickup the girl and give a piggyback ride. People have generic preferences but they are not a barrier to dating most people. Like, most people don't go through a checklist and if someone fails one of those things then its a deal breaker. If everything else is in order then it happens, usually. If someone is shorter than average and they are consistently finding that they struggle, even if the height is voiced, its typically not really that. It's a collection of other things (usually rectifiable) thats holding them back. In the real world, whenever I've heard shorter guys saying about women only wanting tall guys, and thats the reason they are struggling, its usually pretty obvious that its not really that. It's that they aren't the most conventionally appealing person (like how they present themselves, their interests, their personality), and they have a chip on their shoulder and don't really do anything to help themselves. The height thing is a crutch. It's like "women won't date guys shorter than them", many will. It's more that guys are insecure about doing so, or feel threatened by a woman who is taller than them. One of my friends in uni was unusually tall for a girl, few guys were taller than her, and she was good looking.
