Currently progressing through Chapter 14 on Hard Mode. Surprised that my progress has been smooth with the right prep.

Upping the difficulty has definitely forced me to study the battle system more thoroughly. I'm a fan!

Oh yeah, I played more of this with the gf last weekend.

lol they kill off Jessie and Biggs but leave Wedge alive what an anime thing to do. Like y'all, I know you want to do impactful deaths and I know it mirrors the original, but Jessie was actually fun to have around and I don't think she got enough spotlight to just kind of kill like that.

Aside from that, still enjoying the game for the most part. Boss stuff is really fun. I still have problems with some plot stuff but I mean I know what I'm playing so I'm just kind of enjoying the dumb ride.

Supposedly we're going to hear about part 2 sometime soon. They said something about looking forward to some info near the beginning of next year, which is nowish.

Absolutely amazing game, way better than it had any right to be. The narrative was definitely stretched out, but as someone who never really played the original (I think I got to wall market at some point and then quit), I didn't feel like it was bloated at all. They filled the stretched space really well with dialogue and charm, and excellent combat. The hallway-after-hallway combat did start to get stale, but honestly that just brought back FFX vibes which felt really nice. Certain sequences like the Valkyrie are just so awesome that you can't complain about how narratively pointless they are. The game's greatest achievement is probably the open world sections, which are just the right balance of open and focused (unlike say XV). The side quests are just interesting enough to do for fun, but you know they are skippable if you really want to just go on with the story.

I watched some LPs of the original Midgar and it's crazy how short and fast and dry it seems. There's so little character development, everyone is so flat (the translation doesn't help).

The ending is the only questionable part, but I totally trust that team now. Can't wait to see what's next.

It won't stop me from being disappointed that the "old" series is dead though, especially since this is a remake of an old game.

This is the premise of the game though. It's made for exactly people like you. It's straight up icing on the cake. I don't see how you can be disappointed in that.

I wish I was an old school FF7 fan for this game tbh. It would be a one-of-a-kind experience. Instead it's just a really good JRPG.

On the subject of translations, there's one seeming mistranslation that I noticed that was kinda weird.

When Aeris is explaining the Whispers in the Shinra building, she says they're the will of the planet to keep destiny intact, but in the Japanese audio, it's more like "they're here because the planet's too weak too fight against destiny any longer" which is kinda the opposite. I could be misinterpreting, but it might change things a decent amount. Unless they're actually gone, which I'm a little skeptical about.

It took me a minute, and I might subconsciously still be making that mistake.

That said, "Aerith" is the cooler name anyway.

I think you mean Red XIII explaining them, right? In which case, I think what you interpreted as "the planet is too weak to fight destiny" was him saying "the fate of the planet is to die" basically.
