I'm in Chapter 4 and am pretty much in love. I don't remember the characters too vividly (I played the original only once 12 years ago), but so far, they've all been recreated with so much care - charm bursts from each of them.

The combat system is better than I expected, and the music hits all the nostalgic notes.

You guys liked this right I mean come on

I'm actually really neutral on it which is the one place I never thought I'd be. I figured I'd either really love it or think it's absolute garbage. instead I'm just kinda eh.

the pacing is really awful due to dragging out every single section of midgar to the nth degree - but there are parts where it absolutely sings. I think I was really into it when I was at chapter 4 but by the time I got to chapter 7 or 8, I was less enthused.

wall market, though. wall market.

I haven't gotten around to it but I remember being let down every time there was an update for it. Like no turn-based, or that the game will be in multiple parts at full price. But they always suck me back in every time they released a trailer. And I'm rather optimistic at this point

This is pretty much my only issue with it as well.

Other than that the game is outstanding.

seriously though, the game does have a ton of filler because they had to stretch 5-7 hours into 40, but when it's great, it's great

I also played through it with my wife watching alongside me and she knew nothing about FFVII going into it, and she really enjoyed the story. Of course, trying to explain that they changed a bunch of stuff from the original was a little difficult to explain, but I guess we'll have to play the original at some point.

unless I just want to keep her on Remake to see her reaction to the SPOILER in remake form

Eh, I feel like fans would've been a little disappointed if it were only 10-12 hours, even if it probably would've benefited from being streamlined.

I do expect future episodes to be tighter though.

I wouldn't say it does unless you count WRPGs, and those have had the same amount of bloat since the 360/PS3 era. PS2 Tales and Persona are way longer than FF7 Remake.

The pacing is weird but I don't think it was bloated too much out of control. Like they could have probably shaved 10 hours off to make it about 25-30 and that would have been perfect.

The sidequest areas are alright, the combat system is fun enough to keep you wanting more of it, the "filler" is mostly good with some parts that do suck. Basically I'm happy with most of the dungeons but there's a couple that drag on way too long for where they are in the story (looking at you, sewer level).

Has some outstanding moments, at times a great game, liked the combat system. Unreal music and graphics too obviously, plenty of charm. Voice acting managed to be not that cringey either which was good

I've also never seen a game so clearly demonstrate the difference between "padding out" and "fleshing out". The sewers are padding; the wall market is flesh (a lot of flesh, in fact).

9/10 game imo, liked it way way more than I thought I would

For the board in general, pretty positive! It got a small plurality of the votes in the GOTY poll topic, not overwhelming but a good sign.

For me? I liked it a lot. There are pacing issues that are not necessarily linked to the decision to split up the story (which I think was necessary), and it has some texture issues, but otherwise its really great.

I loved it but was initially kind of iffy on the ending. I was planning on immediately jumping back in for a platinum playthrough, but didn't really have the desire to after finishing it.

The big parts I didn't like ended up growing on me over time though and by the time I finished my hard playthrough many months later I was all in.

It's a close #2 on my GOTY list, behind TLOU2.

I didn't care for it. FF7 isn't even in my top 5 FF games and I never thought the story was all that great, so I didn't mind them changing it but the changes they did make were really dumb. I didn't like the combat either, and there was a lot of unnecessary padding. Also hated how Cloud was forced to a slow walk allllll the time

The way they fleshed out the characters was great though and I came away from it liking all of them more than I did before, and the music and visuals were good.

I've been playing at a feverish pace and am nearing what I gather to be the end (Ch. 13 currently).

I now understand those criticisms about pacing, but it hasn't hindered my enjoyment at all. I've enjoyed just about every chapter and if anything, I've had more "oh man, so good" moments since Ch. 8 when Aerith arrived. There have been so many emotionally resonant moments, and the characterizations flirt with corniness so many times, but surprisingly, haven't been cringy.

I feel that these emotionally impactful moments wouldn't carry the same weight if this were a 12 hour campaign, so I'm quite enjoying the length.

And again, the character roster is my favorite part so far, but Aerith and Cloud steal the show among them. Their scenes together even had my gf (who has no idea what Final Fantasy is) melting.
