Fantastic game, even the parts people say are needlessly stretched out are great. The combat is so satisfying that I grinded every character to max level and 90% of materia to max level before I even beat normal mode. Never before have I picked up an RPG day after day after day to keep playing more strictly because I wanted to just enjoy the combat system.

As for the stretched out parts being great, it helps of you're a fan of the OG and also super duper stoned the whole time

Yeah, Aerith is pretty great here. I'm glad they kept her characterization close to the original instead of making her the incorruptible pure girl that KH made her.
Best thing FF7 Remake did was bring the characters back to their original characterization, mostly Cloud and Aerith. Especially Cloud. Cloud has struggled to be likable in anything post-original FF7.

If you're taking "rewrite" to mean they're going to throw the whole thing out, obviously not, but it's likely they will hit most of the same beats but toss in some more major swerves. That's exactly what the first part was!

I can see where people get their complaints about pacing, but I think it's paced very well. Story bits are good for getting you invested in the characters and the story, gameplay bits are good for...gameplay. I wish the random bits of gameplay like the sewers or the tunnels were more intense battles to use the gameplay to its fullest extent. Instead, you get these kinda short battles where a few uses of Triple Slash can just annihilate the enemies.

Almost GOTY if Hades didn't come out this year.

I'm actually really neutral on it which is the one place I never thought I'd be. I figured I'd either really love it or think it's absolute garbage. instead I'm just kinda eh.

the pacing is really awful due to dragging out every single section of midgar to the nth degree - but there are parts where it absolutely sings. I think I was really into it when I was at chapter 4 but by the time I got to chapter 7 or 8, I was less enthused.

wall market, though. wall market.

This sums up my thoughts fairly well, though it's also worth adding that I wasn't big on how weighty the combat was, though it eventually ended up clicking with me to a certain extent (and I think the way character switching works is at least kinda genius).

That's not a rewrite, no. They changed a few things and added several things but the general story beats are all still there. People thinking they're going to completely abandon the course of the original story (and these people exist) are way off base because that isn't going to happen. That's what I meant.

I'm fine with them taking some liberties because it's a remake. It doesn't have to be a beat for beat recreation. But I imagine part 1 is probably the craziest they'll get because they had a lot of time to fill to make Midgar a full-sized game.

Well I mean Zack, Jessie, Biggs and Wedge are all still alive, plus the ending was about them defying destiny's set course.

I don't think we're getting a completely new story, but I definitely think key events will play out differently. I also think Aerith is going to be alive by the end of the last game.

I mean, I wouldn't even consider those major changes. Those were all minor characters in the original game. Zack didn't become important until Crisis Core. I feel like Sephiroth isn't really going to let them get off course that much. That's kind of what the ending seemed to imply, too.

I think it's very unlikely Zack remains a minor character after he has become more important due to Crisis Core and then the game makes a big deal about him surviving. Some of the writing staff from CC are on FF7R as well. Also, Sephiroth at the end of the game is trying to get Cloud to join him and change both of their destinies, so I'm not convinced he cares too much about remaining on course. He even kills Barret not too long before that, though it gets healed by the remake ghosts.

I think this is all a pretty straightforward interpretation!

And I'm not saying they aren't changing anything. I just don't expect it to be a completely different story by the end. You can add a few new things and still have the same story, like what Persona 4 did with Golden or Persona 5 did with Royal.

Usually when you do a change the future storyline, there's a bad future you're trying to prevent happening. I get why Sephiroth would want the future to change. It makes sense for him. FFVII generally has a good ending though, unless you're trying to create a future where everyone lives for some reason.

I mean, maybe I'm wrong! I just don't see the point.

I mean yes, I think that is what they are setting up, though I don't think that will be what actually happens.

Personally my money is on Aerith is trying to avert her own death, but it will still end up happening, but later in the story and hopefully in a way where she overtly exerts more agency then getting lmao backstabbed for plot reasons. I don't really like the theories that someone else will die instead but it's possible.

If FF7R wasn't already as good as it is, I'd be a lot more skeptical. After that I think even if they do change things it'll end up as something worthwhile. 7R is loaded with fanservice while also going out of its way to keep things fun and fresh, and they just have to keep that up.

Aite can someone tell me if there's a way to quickly reach the grappling gun point at the (presumably) end of Ch. 14 after I fast warp to complete the chapter's final side quest (the one with the Don's secret stash locations)?

If you just fast travel back to wall market I don't think you have to do anything but just walk over to it.

Did you go into the sewers before getting that quest and thus missing the stash down there?

Yeah, maybe I'm evaluation this in a more favorable light because Cyberpunk glitches are on everyone's mind right now, but "polish" is a really apt word for it. Just about everything in this game shines with care and quality. I don't think I've gotten a single glitch, either.

I took care of all the side quest stuff, but I had no idea that the grapple gun area was connected to anything other than the sewers, so I had to go through them again. Annoying but whatever.

I feel like my biggest complaint so far is the lack of a cohesive "world" map that gives the player a good sense of their bearings.

Aerith barely made it in last time without the remake, so it's probably fine that some people think to nominate her now that she's probably stronger, though I would too be surprised if she missed the bracket. Barret will surely make it in with just a reminder here as it's a lot easier to get people to nominate returning characters with reason to be stronger.
