Yeah. I've got a lot of enjoyment out of it but that's mostly been empty and brainless, meanwhile it's been radicalizing a generation of kids with /pol/ racist shit.

That said, the blame goes to all social media. 4chan has been most effective on social rejects for far right views (both authoritarian and anarchistic), but Facebook has easily brought out racism and hysteria in older people, while 'public forum' websites like Twitter allow for mass unverifiable misinformation to be easily shared across the world.

4chan is just a type of social media without personal social pressure, which has positives and negatives to how it can be used to manipulate users and radicalize.

I'm willing to bet that 4chan has enabled much more pedophilic behavior than it has prevented. Even to this day there's jailbait threads on /tv/. Plus, as 4chan's usage has gone up, /b/ has just become a porn board while /pol/ is possibly the most active on the site.

No. The world would be a less entertaining place without it.

4ch attracts some ugly ideologues to its containment boards, but the ideals it implicitly upholds/embodies - freedom of speech, association, content of ideas over individual identity, anonymity, organic memetic spontaneity, order-chaos tao, to name a few - will probably prove increasingly important as the century progresses.

...also, 4channers created KS. KS was a net good for the planet.

That isn't a 4chan thing, that is a reality thing. Literally everyone engages in bias confirmation. It is how we are wired. We accept information that supports our established viewpoint much more readily than information that doesn't.

Despite a propensity to hivemindedness, memetic drift and and ideological shifts based on adaptation to real world information is a very real phenomenon on 4chan. Talking points proliferate, other talking points gain traction in response, and so on, almost like a massive chaotic fluid evolving discourse. Like synaptic iterations in a neural network, for lack of better words, constrained by topic and post limits unlike tumblr thus creating a bit of a bottleneck phenomenon.

The rigid ideological orthodoxy of the Nazi crowd infecting /pol/ needs to go though.

This, genuinely. 4chan may have got ahold of a lot of impressionable young men and women and instilled some hateful ideas in them, but Facebook/Twitter got ahold of EVERYONE and did that damage, as well as eroding privacy, dehumanizing everyone who started doing shameless shit with their real name attached, peddled misinformation on an enormous scale, and honestly eroded societal empathy irrecoverably.

Nothing weve done since inventing the bombs has caused as big of a downward shift in the core of humanity as the rise of social media.

Twitter used to be fun. I don't browse 4chan, but from what I can tell they at least embrace their degeneracy. That's more palatable than the narcissist and irrationally self righteous cesspool twitter became over time.

There seems to be two sides - "facedox" twitter and "avi" twitter - the former obsessed with personal branding and callouts/cancelling of others, the latter carrying a more 4chanesque ethos of ideas and unrepentant ****posting.

But I don't entirely disagree - facedox/mainstream twitter is much larger and thus what the site is best known for.

As someone who used to frequent /co/, I still say the bronies are the root of this mess; their shitposting was next level and probably (re-)inspired places like /pol/.
