Got free Portal 22nd May 2010, and then bought myself a Steam game for the first time at on the 12th of November 2012, a copy of Sonic Generations (a retail key, since I couldn't buy online until some time later). I got a few gifts from PotD members between those two. :P

Hard to believe I once had a PC that could barely run Portal, never mind anything else I've gotten since then. Now I have a much better PC, that is due to be replaced soon anyway. Current hardware is a few years old now.

So what was the first game you guys got? You can find it at the bottom of this page.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on 24 Jul, 2012. I bought it from EB Games a few days before my birthday because there wasn't an EB Games where I lived. Honestly, I was really opposed to the idea to have to run Steam just to play one game. Now, I can't see myself without it.

Steam "borrowed" my copy of American Wasteland and never gave it back 12 years ago.

They said they would give it back, but every time I brought it up they told me they lost it or never took it in the first place. True story.

It says my first game was a complimentary Left 4 Dead 2 in 2013. It's weird to look at this list and see games that still have content coming out. after 6 years. I got Terraria in 2014 and I think I just saw that it's final update was recent.

I think I got Steam for a free Portal (or Portal 2?) offer at some point, but then never used it and, at most, I might have played some other free stuff I got. The first time I bought a game on it (unless I'm forgetting a Humble Bundle) was last year and since then I've bought 3-5 games. Still haven't used it a ton, although I put in some time after getting UMvC3.

When Half-Life 2 came out, I bought the Valve collection through Steam. That was 2004. Sometime after that I bought the first non-Valve game on Steam, Rag Doll Kung Fu. It was fun for maybe five minutes and then I had buyer's remorse that was so strong I remember the game title after all these years. I can't remember what my next purchase was, probably another Valve game, I think it took a while before they added anymore non-Valve titles to Steam.

Checking the license page:

Nov 6, 2008 Left 4 Dead Steam Store
Jan 2, 2008 Zen of Sudoku Steam Store
Sep 12, 2007 The Orange Box Complimentary
Jun 3, 2007 Red Orchestra Complimentary
Apr 5, 2007 Dark Messiah Might and Magic Limited Retail Complimentary
May 2, 2006 Half-Life 2: Episode One Complimentary
Oct 7, 2005 Rag Doll Kung Fu Complimentary
Nov 16, 2004 Half-Life 2 Silver Complimentary

It says Half-life 2 Silver, I don't know what was in the Gold edition that I didn't get. I'm pretty sure it added all Valve games that existed on Steam as of November 2004 to my collection. Maybe the gold edition sent you physical copies. I think these early complimentary entries are before the system recorded the source of your purchase. I bought all of these in the Steam Store except Dark Messiah.

Yeah I had my first legit Steam account in about 2009 when I bought the first Torchlight I think I might have installed it earlier to play Half-Life 2 or something back in 2004ish. Steam was so rough back in 2004 the thing was a real pain to work with, gave it a chance again about 4 years later and it was much better.

For those that want a rough estimate on value of a steam library and total hours played you can go to https://steamdb.info/calculator/ pretty interesting site uses the public info from your steam account to value it based on current prices and lowest prices ever offered for games.

There is two sections on their purchase history one area for putting in codes like 7TKY-245K-10NN and then you get the game and another section where you gave them money and then Steam gives you the game.

Nope, the second I sent people to is all redeemed games on your account, the other section is all purchases (both for yourself and others).

Maybe the earliest stuff just don't show if your account is old enough.

I never said they were I said they were in two sections instead of all listed on one. I never said they split them dude, I said that if you look at just purchase history you have to look at both to see ALL games you bought and somehow got on Steam.

I was letting people know if they were curious why they weren't seeing all the games they somehow got on Steam using whatever method.

But what you posted later helps clarify it. Yeah, that could help if the oldest games are missing. Depends how much they need to click through. Redemptions is just one big list, store purchases can require a lot of Load More to get that far.
