There are some serious pacing issues with MM.

What a dumb post this is. Aside from absolutely trying to be very original in its time mechanic and different storyline from virtually every zelda before itAND different gameplay with the transformations... it its an expansion pass?

I mean it came out 2 years after OoT. You wanted MM to be a completely different game mechanically? it did as about as much different things as ANY Zelda game bar BOTW.

ANd that happened literally within 2 years.

Majora is a unique and interesting game that would at worst be a cult classic if you dropped the Zelda skin.

Breath of the wild is a repetitive unexceptional snoozefest that wouldn't be notable if not for the Zelda name as anything more than a physics demo.

Funny you say shit like this when there have been games with the Zelda name that went under the radar or were a bit maligned.

Skyward Sword is a perfect example and Majora's Mask early in it's life both of these games were not beloved on release. You act like the Zelda name makes people love every entry in the series automatically which is a joke.

So many ridiculous comments on these boards. It's painful to read. To see so many grown men react so petty because a videogame they personally didn't enjoy won a contest on the internet... Jesus.

"BotW is a walking simulator", "BotW is a physics demo". What a load. There's a reason BotW won and Skyward Sword didn't even come close. Even though they're both flagship Zelda games. Get the hell over it, sheesh.

that part only lasts about 2 hours, but it's tough because you essentially need to play it continuously

but yeah, it gets insanely better after that

No, I act like the zelda name gives a game massive exposure and good will. Majora's mask is not an accessible game, which squandered that good will. Breath of the wild is famously accessible at this point. It is an incredibly polished experience that has a lot of interesting mechanics at work. Breath of the wild does a great job out of the gate, but ends up being a fairly hollow experience with a lot to do, but little to actually do. If you cut everything from the game that doesn't serve the narrative, the game would be over in about 5 hours.

Yeah, the game is designed for you to do as much as you want to do before you finish it.

Yes, but I makes the game a relatively hollow experience. See something cool over the horizon and want to explore? It will either be a shrine or nothing. Repeat over and over.

There isn't depth to an experience when nothing can add or supplement the core experience. Games with a big open world and no meaningful content were something people had started growing weary of long before breath of the wild. And it isn't anything special in that regard beyond it's absurd level of polish and Zelda branding. That's not to say it's a bad game, it just isn't a particularly spectacular one once you see behind the curtain.

The fact that essentially all content is skippable without impacting the story is the games biggest weakness. It means that there is no motivation to really do anything beyond making your own fun. Which is fine, but sea of thieves and no man's sky aren't winning any awards for game of the century without a significant challenge.

So the question is, do the parts that aren't making your own fun add up to a meaningful enough experience? I would argue it is a resounding no, the only things differentiating it from the previously mentioned games it's absurd level of polish and it's Zelda branding.

Breath of the wild is fine. But it isn't anything special. It does nothing to advance the medium and is over all a worse game that both it's predecessors in the series and contemporaries in the open world genre.

MM is orders of magnitude better and is still one of the best games ever made. Even after all our technological advances, no one would dare try to make a game like that again. The design is just pure magic, even ignoring all the Zelda branding. And they made it all in just 1 year. Outer Wilds is the only one that came close (and it was incredibly good).

It definitely has some advantages with its simplicity, but the game is certainly not for everyone.

I'm close to the 200 hour mark in the game, and all the time I've put into it I wouldn't say has magnified the experience too much. I'm just someone who is able to get enjoyment out of exploring every little corner.

I've been trying to think of ways to alter the game to increase enjoyment of exploration, and honestly, it's hard, because at its core, the shrines are the primary thing to seek out. Just like in any other Zelda, they are the floating heart pieces of the world. That's why quests will lead to them (whomever said some are just empty inside missed the point of shrine quests), or they'll have some small puzzle, or a fight. I mean, if you treat Shrines exclusively like heart pieces, there isn't a Zelda game that beats them in terms of what it asks you to do.

But that also leaves you with questions of what else is worth it. Finding Koroks totally is worth it. Boosting that inventory is part of the grind in overcoming the inventory system. And Koroks are everywhere, so again, you can do as much as you want to, and don't have to do near all of it to get the max. I GUESS you could replace koroks with just finding inventory upgrades, maybe even replacing hearts from shrines with inventory boosts and spread heart pieces around the world instead. But then you'd have people complaining that it's too hard to find heart pieces in the big world.

It's also interesting seeing speedrunners who specialize in other games saying BotW is their second favorite, but I guess you'd have to ask them to elaborate why that is.

Breath of the Wild is the only open-world game I've ever enjoyed, for what that's worth. The world is far less empty than MGSV's, or FF15's, or any other open-world game I've played (admittedly I haven't played Skyrim but that's because I hated Oblivion so I can't imagine it's that much better).

I think focusing on what "advances the story" is a mistake, because BotW is not a game about plot. It's a game about setting. It's about learning how the world got this way, about learning about the surviving cultures. It's about looking at the architecture of the Lanayru Promenade and realizing that it's one of the only structures with representations of Loftwings, meaning it's one of the oldest man-made things on the whole map. It's about finding the Eighth Heroine buried in snow in the Gerudo Highlands, wondering how and why such a massive statue was moved so far. It's about finding the burned-out husk of Lon Lon Ranch and feeling like you want to cry. It's about walking by Lake Hylia at night and seeing a massive shining dragon and watching it in awe. It's about building your own town in the wilderness and feeling hope that, no matter how bad things get, people can come together and make it better.

I'm a fanatic for environmental storytelling, so maybe this kind of stuff doesn't resonate with other people, I dunno.

But MM is my favorite Zelda game (well, it's a tie with OOT, but are great for different reasons) so BotW would have to be fantastic for me to prefer it

And...again, I don't think it's fair to judge a game without playing it, but the concept of the game sounds boring to me
Screw those open world games with no real goal, just to waste your time and collect pointless stuff
