Do you wear a mask when going out in public now?

I discovered that the respirator that I'd bought for a project a few years ago is rated P100, so I've been wearing it while shopping. It can filter out 99.8% of particulate matter (plus organic vapors and acid gasses), even better than an N95 mask. But it's crazy heavy, it's kind of hard to breathe while wearing it, and being made of rubber and plastic it's hot as hell. And I have to yell to get anyone to hear me.

Paper surgical mask when indoors at a store, nothing outdoors. It's mostly just symbolic anyway, a gesture of respect to people around me. It certainly doesn't prevent others from sneezing and coughing with no mask or mask hanging off their chin.

I use a cloth mask my mom sewed for me. That said, the only time I'm in "public" at all nowadays is when I go downstairs to check my mail or get delivery of some kind (groceries/restaurant food/other supplies). Or also when I go out on the balcony of my apartment, if that counts

I have a reusable cloth mask that I wear at work. But only because it's a site wide policy. No mask, no work. I take it with me when I go to stores in case it's one that requires a mask to enter. But I don't bother wearing one if it isn't required.

You're not just being rude if you don't wear a mask. You can get the virus and be asymptomatic, and then you're spreading the virus further and you're potentially killing people.

People generally get annoyed by people saying stupid things while insulting their intelligence for not believing said stupidity. A mask of any sort is considerably more effective for slowing or preventing the transmission of a droplet-borne virus than a chain fence would be for stopping mosquitoes. It's far from perfect protection, obviously, especially where the eyes are such a significant route of infection (tear ducts are a direct line to the nasal passages, though that's significantly more relevant for catching it than transmitting it), but it's a non-trivial difference that requires a trivial amount of effort. Basic risk analysis therefore dictates that it's a good idea.

I would agree with you if the "virus" wasn't heavily politicized with the MSM licking up every opportunity available, releasing half-truths or falsified information to steer the narrative in [their] favor.

This has nothing to do with how politicized the issue is (not that there's any way to deal with a pandemic on this scale without politicizing it, given that managing it requires political action). It has to do with the fact that it's airborne, extremely easily transmitted, can be transmitted by asymptomatic people, and all of these risk factors can be mitigated to some extent or another by having as many people as possible wear masks. The media and politicians can do whatever they want, but common sense will still dictate that wearing a mask is a good idea (provided it doesn't interfere with the supply for the medical professionals that are at highest risk, which homemade options do not).

Your entire position on this seems to be "the media and politicians say this is a big deal so I'm going to believe that it is not because I'm so smart," with no actual basis given for that position or even a concrete idea of what that position entails. That's not an informed, enlightened, or even basically sensible position, despite how you insist on acting. A little less intellectual masturbation and a little more basic common sense.

The common paper surgical mask is somewhat effective for the first 5 minutes, before it becomes moistened by your breath and stops being more than symbolic. Bandanas that do not seal at all, just a social gesture and sort of cool to walk around emulating an Old West desperado.

So, yes, rude to not wear a symbolic face covering, but insignificant unless you wear a mask that seals well, and change it often.

Yes, I wear a Lone Ranger mask. While it doesn't provide any protection, it's very stylish and gives the opportunity to call people I meet "Tonto" (which means "fool" in Spanish)

But seriously, I only wear a mask when in places requiring a mask.

A couple cloth ones should be showing up in the mail any day now, at which point I do intend to wear them whenever I go out. These days, though, I'm only going out for biweekly groceries (last one was the 4th, next one is on monday) and the occasional walk around my neighbourhood. In the case of the former, I don't think I've made such a trip since the last time I discussed this, and in the case of the latter, distancing is easy enough that it's not as big of a deal.

Just about anything you can cover your face with will have some effect. Nothing's going to be perfect, obviously (short of a full-on SCBA kit, which is pretty hard to beat for protection, but a typical one still doesn't work so well for containment because that's not what it's for), but the nature of exponential growth is such that any small improvement can have significant downstream effects. Infecting 4 people today instead of 5 can mean a couple hundred fewer cases in two months' time.

Quite simply, if improvised masks truly did nothing, public health agencies would be telling people not to bother, not saying that they're an okay alternative if proper masks are unavailable.

Absolutely, the public health agencies with funding at stake aren't motivated to tell whatever is politically correct. I'd surely believe them rather than peer-reviewed research in the British Medical Journal. Absolutely!
