People generally get annoyed by people saying stupid things while insulting their intelligence for not believing said stupidity. A mask of any sort is considerably more effective for slowing or preventing the transmission of a droplet-borne virus than a chain fence would be for stopping mosquitoes. It's far from perfect protection, obviously, especially where the eyes are such a significant route of infection (tear ducts are a direct line to the nasal passages, though that's significantly more relevant for catching it than transmitting it), but it's a non-trivial difference that requires a trivial amount of effort.
