Does "drink" rhyme with "drink"?

Do you believe a word can rhyme with itself?

Not gonna say who is saying what here, in case any of youse who hates me guts with a fiery passion want to slant the results against me out of sheer spite...

No. Drink is one word.

Rhymes can absolutely be the same word. You'd say "reign" and "rain" are rhymes of the each other even though they're still pronounced the same; it's no different from using the same spelling twice. As Nightcrawler mentioned already, it's just lazy, but technically it still works.

I'm not sure whether or not I can link this to a poor lexicon, but you can save this asinine argument from the brink without resorting to any real time sink. In better times, I think, I'd suggest you better off going to an ice rink, rather than disputing rhyme and repetition over "drink."

It's tricky, but "reign" is usually pronounced with a shorter "a" sound, while "rain" has a slightly longer one.

In what accent? They're identical in the vast majority of British accents, I can assure you!

(Edit: the A sounds, I mean. Depending on the accent one can get a very slight difference in length of the ending syllable.)

You can rhyme a word with itself, but it's a lazy cop-out for finding a more legitimate rhyme and will often stand out so glaringly as to take away from the piece as a whole unless that repetition is somehow significant.

That's just making it clear that you can't have a single word be a rhyme, it has to be matched with another entity, but that other entity can be a clone.

"dRIVE, dRIVE, dRIVE, dRIVE, dRIVE" is not iambic pentameter, just like:

"I like to drive,
It's fun to drive"

isn't a rhyme.

That's not even close to being the same thing. The only time when the same word is acceptable is *maybe* when the word has two different meanings and the lyrics are strongly contrasting that difference in meanings.

In terms of how it's defined, sure. In terms of how rhymes actually get used (to provide a pleasing repetition of sounds that helps to define the meter and rhythm of the poem), though, using the same word again provides the same repetition of sounds and therefore the same function. Practically speaking, that's a rhyme.

Yep. Lots of British people do, depending on the region they're from. I have friends here who do, though it isn't how I generally do it myself - and I do say "generally", because depending on the emphasis, what it is I'm saying, and the environment, sometimes even I will.

As for the "dictionary definition" pedantry, have you never heard of evolution of language? How do you think dictionaries even happened? If you take dictionary definitions as rules one can never ever break in practical use, you're both ignorant and snobbish. Any linguistics professor would tell you that's how languages stagnate.
