Maybe this topic is needed. Maybe it isn't. One way to find out!

For those of you who are software developers by trade, what kind of experience do you have? What kind of teams and projects have you worked on?

Dump all your unreasonably opinionated opinions here. Let's just see where this goes.

Do I have to currently be a software developer to participate or is the fact that I have a (useless) degree in this good enough?

If anything I'd like some advice on getting back into it.

Honestly I've been mostly IT for so long with very limited actual software development that I scarcely consider myself fit for this topic

But I'll join anyway. I would like to get back to mostly developing someday.

Well I guess I can start a discussion then.

Ive only had to use Java and C (through school) and C# (automation for my current job) and I guess Objective C for an iPhone App I did for my class project

Ive liked C# of what I used most but I see some people get very passionate about which languages they proclaim to be the best

Which do you prefer?

I've been a dev at my current place of work for 2.5 years, but I've been at the company for 6 years total. Worked 1 year on the support team and then 2.5 years in a weirdly specific data conversion role.

Our team has about 16 devs and about 10 qa, a few product owners and scrum masters, two dev managers (one more of a lead architect and the other more of the clerical/personnel side of things).

A majority of our work is B2B (our clients are generally businesses, not consumers). At any given time we have about 7 or 8 products being worked on at a time (generally 2-3 devs and 1 qa on a team), so it stays busy. We've sometimes had as many as 15 production releases in a single day.

We do a lot of ETL work (putting square pegs in round holes) so it's a good environment for inexperienced/junior devs to get a foothold on the professional world because there's plenty of work to do that's simple to wrap your head around ("we need to take records from this database and make it look different and then put it into that other database"). But then of course when need it all to scale to handle tens of thousands of clients and process terabytes of data every day, you need some architects who know their stuff.

The majority of our code is C# so that's what I know best by a long shot. I've messed around in Python before but the amount of experience is so vastly different that I can't really fairly say. I'm definitely in favor of a strongly typed world but that has a lot to do with the nature of the work my company does.

We grew pretty rapidly over the past 1-2 years and part of that hiring surge involved bringing on more qa than devs so that we could have more product lanes going simultaneously.

You can start with all the tech companies contributing to the absurd high cost of living in San Francisco.

That's sad af. Are you a scrum master or something? (nothing wrong with that, you're still a software dev and part of the team, but it's def nice to write code every once in a while)

If anything I'd like some advice on getting back into it.

Press F12 right now (or whatever open the dev tools) and start writing scripts and messing with stuff. Make a script that dynamically searches any topic for messages containing "foolmo" or "ulti" and deletes them. Or recreate that script that turns all the divs on a page into physical objects that fall down and can be pushed around by the mouse.

Just starting on any little thing will unleash the floodgates of ideas and then it's hard not to work on something and get more and more into it.
