Democratic Mayor, Frank Scott Jr created a Bridge To Work program for HOMELESS PEOPLE in Little Rock, Arkansas where they are paid MORE than minimum wage of 9.25 an hour to PICK UP TRASH and after impressive results, they are considering extending the program.

It started in April and pays homeless people to clear trash and aims to get their lives backon track.

It was initially a 6 month trial but now they want to extend it until Sept. 2020.

It is managed by the Canvas Community Church and the city spent 80,000 for the program

Pastor Paul Atkins said "We're super excited about what has gone on and we hope to be able ot keep the momentum going"

In addition to the paycheque, they were also offered physical and mental health treatment, job interviews and even a ROOF over their head!

Around 380 people have signed up and they work in teams of 8 with more than 1800 hours put in and 2000 bags of trash cleared

Many of the poor have signed up through the church while a large minority have been approached on the street to join

Felecia Cooks, a local leader was overwhelmed by this after hearing the mayor is planning to renew the program.

She said "I just knew. I never had a doubt. I never had a doubt because i knew our potential and i knew that we would get to this point. And so, it made me just want to cry out with tears of joy"

While I'm sure the project benefits the workers and it helps a vulnerable class of people, is trash *really* that big an issue there? Or is it more a matter that they're lacking in skills so they can't provide more essential labor, like repairing roads?

More places need to do this. And not just for the homeless. Having a program for people to be able to pick up trash for cash.

You have them trained so they can do valuable jobs, and with a trained population, businesses requiring lots of expertise can grow.

Being a bar cook isn't a valuable job.

When you can't just get a job like yours when automation takes over, people will have to train. When people have to train, they'll learn a skill they want to do. When people aren't productive without training, prices have to fall by government incentive or free market forces.

Good thing I'm not a bar cook. And a bar cook is as valuable as the number of being going to that bar to eat and learning to cook well requires training.

Being as they are being paid to do it and yes. I don't support the free labour programs. The other perks seems great too. Even more so for the homeless.

For the homeless it's better than being on the street. They also get other stuff. It isn't supposed to give them full time employment but is supposed to help them get it.
