A long time ago, I started ranking 100 episodes of television as nominated by you all, the Board 8ers.
I have not, as it turns out, completely given up out of hand on this project, and I'm about to return and wrap this thing up with the forceful vengeance of a bad CBS show that keeps getting renewed thanks to the elderly folks who leave their TVs on all night because they are so hard of hearing that they don't realize the TV was on to begin with.

100 episodes, rated and ranked on a 30 point scale. That was the promise, and I'm about to pick it back up. Curious what the remaining episodes are?

American Dad - "Rapture's Delight"
Babylon 5 - "Confessions and Lamentations"
Baskets - "Renoir"
Buffy the Vampire Slayer - "Hush"
Chuck - "Chuck vs. the Ring"

Invader Zim - "Mysterious Mysteries"
Nominated by: Hombad

In my life, I occasionally experience these brief flashes of doubt as to whether, during my formative years, something crucial was lost. Maybe now I exist as a shell of a man, incapable of appreciating things that others take for granted. That was the dreaded existential crisis I faced while watching this completely horrible, slapdash show featuring utterly terrible animation and a script that felt like it was fed through a predictive text program rather than filtered the reasoning brain of a human.

While I've never watched Invader Zim before (and after today, I don't feel the pressing desire to further torture myself with this sophomoric drivel of the worst kind), it seems to me that the premise must be one of those "alien is a just like a real kid now watch hijinks!" kind of shows. The episode centers around a character that seems to have formed primarily to allow a specific voice actor to earn a quick paycheck. The Mr. Moviefone voice checks in, playing the host of a paranormal docuseries under the episode's titular name of "Mysterious Mysteries." Names like this are, in my estimation, signs of complete creative bankruptcy. Actual redundancy is funny. Repetiton is not. A name like "Unknown Mysteries of the Bizarre and Weird" would go a lot further than "Mysterious Mysteries." It demonstrates a lack of original thought, with a reliance on a pool of both words and thoughts that appears to have dried up.

The actual narrative here seems to center around a show host being forced to put on a bad episode of his series for cloudy purposes. His research into the Zim character seems to yield no fruitful results, instead driving him temporarily mad. However, this is revealed to be a ruse to get ratings. If that made no sense to you, then you're on the same page as me. Nothing about this episode had an cohesion from one moment to the next. Events happened, seemingly at random. Characters spoke sentences that were just meaningless and boring. Loud noises were had, and occasionally the worst sin in children's shows was committed on screen for all of us to see: screaming loudly does not make something funny.

For years I've argued that last point. Even as a child, shouting and yelling like a fool earned no points in my book. As an adult, I have even less time for that. In fact the entire brand of humor on this show parades a stupidity that boggles my mind. Everything is centered around having characters say and do random things for no purpose. I can't attach myself to the characters without an underlying logic to their characters and an early consistency. That was not to be had here. Nor was this show artful and bizarre in a Lynchian way. It was just some sort of processed cartoon content that reminds me of that Nickelodeon brand of nontertainment. I would urge any and all people watching some of these episodes to ignore this one if they prioritize enjoying their lives to not.

Storytelling: 1/10
Characterization: 1/10

American Dad - "Rapture's Delight"
Nominated by: Xeybozn

I've generally found that Seth MacFarlane's animated work leaves me cold. Strangely, I enjoyed A Million Ways to Die in the West, and the sci fi nerd in me is absolutely head over heels for the love letter that is The Orville. I went in with relatively low expectations to American Dad here, given that I've always seen it as a B-list back-up to Family Guy. That low expectation may have helped the majority of this episode, which in a strange way plays on the It's a Wonderful Life theme while going in an entirely different direction.

Stan is left behind after the Rapture (a concept which feels extremely contrived), and hijinks ensue as the world turns into Escape From New York. The end of the episode brings the episode full circle and, in theory, sets up a new entire status quo for the show. I highly doubt the following episode maintained continuity, but still, it was a little bit interesting to see what should have been a major risk taken on such a light, fluff piece cartoon.

For me, there are aspects of satire in regards to Christianity at the start of the episode which are wicked and well-presented, but the episode lost momentum pretty consistently throughout the episode. In fact, the character of Jesus and, further along, the character of the Antichrist were so terribly presented that it ended up being a turn-off for me here. It was too schticky, and the consistency of Jesus in particular was all over the place. I think, for me, humor needs to have a straight man also, and there was none of that here. Alice in Wonderland, for example, works because Alice is a normal person. She asks the right questions. Here, everyone is just as ridiculous as the person before, and it makes the stakes feel less meaningful. When everyone is crazy, no one comes off as crazy.

The climax featuring the Antichrist was particularly bad in my estimation. The gimmick, the schtick, of being the opposite of Christ in every way could have played well, but it went for the obvious jokes in a hackeneyed way. There's a bit of a wink and a nod to the fact that these are the most contrived and unoriginal opposite aspects of Jesus, but that doesn't handwave the criticism. By the episode's end, the potential from the start felt fairly squandered, almost as if multiple writers divvied up sections of the episode so no theme could be carried through.

Very much a show that feels like a filler show.

Writing: 3/10
Characterization: 4/10
Scarlet Factor: 3/10
Overall Rating: 10/30

Babylon 5 - "Confessions and Lamentations"
Nominated by: CybrMonkey

This is probably one of the biggest failures in the history of television.

Of course, I mean that, narratively, Sheridan and his crew (and by the way, Bruce Boxleitner will forever be awesome) completely fail to prevent a galaxy-wide pandemic from wiping a race out of existence. The ending strikes me as particularly infuriating (in a good way) - after two billion beings are snuffed out, a bartender comments with one of those terrible racist one-liners before carrying on with his day. I think that joke has aged particularly well in the current climate, really sliding under my skin and irritating me to no end. Great, great stuff.

As I remember, the Markab had been established on Babylon 5 prior to this episode. Not a lot, mind you - if this had been made in the era of Game of Thrones, we would be seeing two or three main characters bite it alongside our episode's newest one-off characters. But in the world of Babylon 5, we're still transitioning out of the episodic structure of Next Generation. This transitional period of TV is very unique. Stories like this one can be self-contained but still carry a real weight of impact. It's unique.

The episode is very heavy, but in fact the best scene comes early on, as Delenn and Sheridan share a din. (Ner) The cultural differences are so heavy-handed and ludicrous that you can't help but wonder whether Delenn is trolling Sheridan or being truthful. The result is seeing a grounded leader thrown totally off-balance. Great stuff.

Overall, I wouldn't say this is my favorite episode of the series, but it definitely is an off-beat, unusual episode with a strange tone. The pacing is bizarre but still enjoyable. Everything just has a unique feeling that I don't think the series really duplicates ever again.

I'm interested in recommending some stuff, I missed the last one!

My goals for my choice:

- It's personally really special to me
- the episode is relatively standalone
- Scarlet hasn't seen it
- anime

I'm gonna be so mad when he gives it a bad review. Maybe i should just start getting mad now.

I think if anything you are gonna end up with more anime next time given you you made a big deal about 'I hate anime so don't nominate it' and then proceeded to rank the one anime episode you got the highest (thus far) of the animated episodes.

to be fair it's an incredible objective

I'm actually looking forward to the end of this run so I can see what the next 100 nominations will look like. As long as there's not a ton of animation, it should be fun.

I would definitely not allow Blue's Clues. Most children's shows of that nature wouldn't be included.

You really shouldn't try and nominate a lot of things you know I definitely will hate. That's how this project got sidetracked for months last time. I don't know why people would just want to see a project fail.

I was pretty sure you'd dislike most things I nominated (and you did) but I wasn't nominating them because I thought you'd hate them if that makes sense. Hopefully I did not contribute much to your initial abandonment of the project in any case.

No, actually none of it was demotivating in the slightest. And I don't mind rating some things intentionally nominated because I dislike them. But that shouldn't be a motivating factor. I rather enjoyed giving everything you nominated a shot except for the Married with Children.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - "The Inner Light"
Nominated by: Poke

In what I consider one of the quietest episodes of Next Generation, Picard's journey through another life always has given me mixed emotions. The ending of this episode is phenomenally powerful and moving. Words oftentimes can get in the way of a scene. Here, the power of silence and the use of shadows creates an intimate moment of vulnerability in Picard. In fact, from the beginning of the series, it's clear that when we receive these intimate moments, they are often the best ones. TNG created Picard as a mutt-mix of Gilbert and Sullivan's legacy as well as Master and Commander cast member. The result is a character that very often refuses to emote publicly. Our insights into tender moments of weakness therefore feel so powerful in comparison.

As for the episode's narrative and plot, it's not actually all that special. What IS special is the performance and the gimmick at the end. Much like a certain DS9 episode I watched, allowing characters to live out their lives and then return to where we left them is often a very liberating motif in science fiction. It gives characters wisdom in such a wonderful way. How exciting it would be to go back and relive your life with knowledge of everything you could do differently! This episode plays a bit of that up while focusing primarily on showing Picard's growing comfort in the wrong life. It's really quite moving in the end.

While this episode doesn't necessarily progress any relationships on the Enterprise or in the galaxy, it's often been cited as one of those amazing concept pieces that TNG did the best of any Star Trek series, and for that I have to tip my hat at the quality of what I've just witnessed once again for the umpteenth time.

Storytelling: 8/10
Characterization: 10/10
Scarlet Factor: 10/10
Overall Rating: 28/30
