I can kinda see the non-racist similarities with those first two. Dee Jay uses a kind of acrobatic moveset (I know there's a real fighting style he uses but I can't think of the name) and Diddy is similarly acrobatic and chaotic. DK as Mr. Sandman also sorta makes sense as a big brute plus he's the final boss of Punch-Out on Wii.

But eh...unfortunate side effects for picking those fighters to represent those characters.

The feather was removed from the spirit as well in the day 1 update.

Diddy incorporates similar kicking moves to DeeJay (the spirit condition is Diddy's launching kick attack, for example) which is probably why that got chosen.
Likewise DK was probably chosen both as a reference to Punchout Wii and to reference Sandman's big punch.

Donkey Kong is one of the hardest fighters in Punch Out Wii, along with Sandman. He fits well. People say it should've been Little Mac which is pants on head stupid because Sandman is visually styled to oppose Mac as a towering man.

Similarly Diddy is shown to prioritize side specials which matches Jay's kick.

To say that you can't use these similarities to bring the spirit to life because your implicitly biased brain sees a racism connection is regressive.

More shocked at Tac's portrayal. Pretty hard to justify the dark skin tone specifically.

I think DK and Diddy were moreso just kinda unfortunate implications but without any real malice. Plus, the two make sense anyway.

Villager was given the darker skin late in development, June era footage shows them all white like in 4, which makes Tac a possible coincidence. Definitely the most "hmmm" one

What is the deal there? What makes it racist?

This isn't really deliberate racism, just decisions made at the cost of insensitivity.

This one of those things where I don't see a need to whine about this. This isn't hurting anybody. Plus, a lot of the fun of these spirits is figuring out how and/or why these fighters represent the spirit.

Quite the opposite, actually. I'm the one whose first reaction isn't to see "black person" and think "gorilla." Because I don't see the two as interchangeable, unlike the actual racists who want to call me a racist for a comparison that I personally am not making.
