Sacred Stones was ranked/rated as the 3rd best FE game under the Radiant games in the reddit polls I held (which got 1600 responses), so it's not that niche.

7 will always be unsurpassable, best supports, characters, maps, and variety of well balanced difficulties. I dont think any fire emblem has nailed the satisfaction of HHM prior or since.

6 could be a contender with simple QOL features.

5 is just complete bs and I love it. I would just kill to get a 5 remake with mila's turnwheel, because as of now the game isn't super playable without savestates, which can be abused and as such make the game less fun.

I actually can't even decide anymore. I loved Genealogy in the past but I'm kind of hesitant to play it again because my tastes have shifted since then to be much less fond of time wasting stuff in games, Conquest is great gameplay wise but that's about all Fates has to offer, and Gaiden/Echoes is a hard game to really make up my mind about. I ended up voting for Echoes just for the hell of it since if I don't probably no one else will

I'm unsure if I even get into Fire Emblem if I played any game but 7 first. There are just a lot of things that game absolutely nails and I'm not sure other games in the series really put it all together well enough to keep me hooked if my foot isn't already in the door.

What is with this sudden Board 8 Sacred Stones love recently?

Awakening > Fire Emblem (GBA) > Path of Radiance > Radiant Dawn > Sacred Stones

From the ones I've played which is not much.

Ive always loved Sacred Stones! But Path of Radiance is the best FE game Ive played.

Path of Radiance > Sacred Stones > Radiant Dawn > Blazing Blade >>> Awakening > Shadow Dragon

It's hardly just Board 8. Ever since around mid-2011, Sacred Stones has become one of the more popular FEs while Blazing Sword is a middling title in popularity, maybe slightly above average. I don't fully get it either, but I think it has to do with some combination the following:

1. The old guard who thought "7, 9, and 6 are the best; 11 and 8 sucked; 10 was kinda bad too" may have disproportionally lost interest in the series during the 6 year gap between Radiant Dawn and Awakening.

2. Sacred Stones being an ambassador game made it a lot of people's first Fire Emblem, or at least second with Awakening being the first.

3. Sacred Stones is a good gateway game for people who started the series with Awakening or Fates, since it shares quite a bit in common with them and is more streamlined and modern than say Blazing Sword.

4. Sacred Stones fans may have always been a silent majority, who were previously afraid to speak up due to Sacred Stones haters being so vocal in the 00s. Whereas now that they're gone and newer fans are liking Sacred Stones, the older SS fans are speaking up more too.

5. While the Blazing Sword bashing essay (serenesforest.net/forums/index.php?/topic/27311-quintessence-dont-understand) was heavily bashed itself at the time, I did notice that within a few months that people's opinion on Blazing Sword had soured while Sacred Stones was getting more respect (Sacred Stones' story got praised off and on in the essay). So I feel that the essay did have a larger impact than it appeared to at the time.

I remember when Sacred Stones came out people hated it for the "grinding" potential
But then it became a staple of the series and nobody considers it a negative for Sacred Stones anymore

I guess while typing it out, those really are the main villains that exist in today's culture, good natured people who want to use science to solve problems that have always existed.

But i prefer me a good old fashioned psychopath or "strength deserves everything" villain.

Nergal is the exact same story but instead of using dark magic for society he does it for his children, which personally I feel is much more relatable.

Voted PoR in the topic poll but while writing this post changed my mind and think it'd be Radiant Dawn. Super close though. RD would walk away with this if the Support Conversations weren't all but eliminated.

Radiant Dawn >= Path of Radiance > Blazing Blade > Sacred Stones > Awakening > Fates (Conquest > Revelation > Birthright)

Haven't played the others but I'd jump on remakes/localizations of 4-6.

I've always liked Sacred Stones and never really understood the hate

Part of what makes Lyon interesting are the differences in portrayal he has in Eirika v Ephraim's routes. I prefer the Ephraim take by far where he's willingly entered into the pact because had the vision of his country being devastated and he's mostly playing a part when he acts possessed - he's still totally there. With that taken into account I like to pretend he's really like that in Eirika's route but that may not be the intent idk.

Tellius villains are better anyway, but Lyon is alright in my book.

Voted Radiant Dawn but it and PoR are tied for me.

I'd imagine Sacred Stones has gained popularity mostly because it shares a lot of concepts with the DS games like random encounters, branching class promotes, being able to grind, even being easier in general. So it probably ends up being one of the higher tier ones for people who started with Awakening or Fates.

Meanwhile the purists who didn't like that stuff don't hate on it as much cause the DS games are bigger targets

Probably Sacred Stones, but I want to mention that Shadows of Valentia is a pretty underrated game.

I personally like Sacred Stones more than 7 for little things, one being one of the main modes isnt just a retread of most of the game and I like some of the characters and gameplay additions

But still like Radiant Dawn most

If fates wasnt trying too hard to be money grabbing ripoff of Awakening I couldve liked it more

Results so far are differing from the Fire Emblem Heroes reddit and the Fire Emblem reddit that I held the polls on. Shadows of Valentia was valued much higher there. Awakening and Blazing Blade were valued less.

anyway my list is weird because I haven't gotten around to the two big console games, which I really should do one of these days. Genealogy of the Holy War > Binding/Blazing Blades > New Mystery of the Emblem > Shadows of Valentia > Sacred Stones is probably my top 5.

I'm always surprised when I remember it's actually overall pretty well liked. my strongest memories more relate to the game having many vocal haters. especially around the time it came out. I guess it just goes to show how the loudest voices in the room can easily shape the narrative.

Shadow Dragon was good enough for me to beat it 4 times (Normal, H1, H3, H4) and I still try H5 from time to time but I generally get stuck on one map and give up. my last attempt actually got further than any of my previous runs, but I ended up burning myself out and putting the game down. good thing is that with the story being almost nonexistant I can pick it up and continue that run whenever I feel inspired.

Fates I had to force my way through to the end. I tried playing it again on harder difficulties to see if that would get me into the game but so far I haven't had much luck. it just doesn't hold my interest at all.

After fates I was a little worried I didnt like fire emblem anymore. Birthright is so easy that its painful, and conquest just has dumb gimmicks that aren't really fun. Both have stale and bland characters, and the child mechanic is really forced and pointless, and I say this as someone who is a big fan of waifu emblem.

Echos was awesome though, and the turnwheel is a great addition to old fire emblem games allowing the game to be classic difficult, but not forcing you to have to replay 20 turns because of one simple mistake.
