Teachers. They require more education.

Both should be paid better, though. Certainly better than construction workers. Can't wait until we replace them with robots.

Silly topic. Even sillier replies.

Both should be paid equally well because both directly provide for the continued functionality of society. Like, what did a hedge fund manager ever do? Oh, but they work with money, so we have to pay them well so they're less likely to try to steal it.

And I can't speak for elementary teachers, but I quit teaching high school because I couldn't handle the workload. At the time, I was still living with my parents, who cooked and did laundry and stuff for me, so I literally only had to focus on teaching...and i couldn't keep up. It was still cutting into my sleep schedule after excising everything else. I dunno how other people do it, but between lesson plans, grading papers, communicating with students and parents, and doing all the other things that a "good" teacher is supposed to do, I was pulling 100+ hours a week. When I realized my choices were to be a shitty teacher or simply not be a teacher. I decided that nobody deserves a shitty teacher.

I get paid really well and I'm not saying that teachers as a rule should be paid more than police officers I'm just highlighting the common misconceptions about teaching hours and holidays.

For example, I finished work at the end of July, started back at work on August 22nd, I have 1 week off between then and 28th January. Please tell me more about these holidays I appear to be missing.

As someone who works full time maintenance year round in a school, basically everything Wreath (MWC?) is saying is dead wrong. Teachers get paid less per year than me, and I have almost no skills nor degree. Teachers are required to constantly reup on trainings/classifications/certifications etc. without being compensated for it. Teaching a kindergarten student means you have to be capable of knowing signs of abuse, allergy, infection, and a billion other things. Standards and trainings switch every year. Even if teachers were paid twice what I make, and I had all the credentials to jump in, I would still not choose to do their job.

Being a workhorse is hard physical labor, but physical labor (spoilers for life) is literally not that hard because the human body can do so much more than what federal law will even allow your employer to ask of you.

Depends. Cops put their lives on the line sometimes, that should be compensated. But not always.

Both are underpaid. I was talking to a guy fresh out of the military who was looking to get into law enforcement. He could go to Monroe, MI and start at around 50k a year, where the worst call he's going to get is probably domestic violence. Not very life-threatening.

Or he could go to Detroit and make 30k and get shot at by gangs for a living.

Idk about 100+ hours a week but teachers quitting due to workload is really not uncommon. The unfair and draconian demands put on teachers in the UK is one of the reasons I left.

I know a lot of people who have left the profession because of that. Holidays are obviously great but not when you're killing yourself for the other 10 months.

Why take it seriously? It's like a week-old account. He scattergun trolled random topics (the Adventure Time one, the nominations topic, etc) before settling on this one. There's a clear agenda here. You're acting like you can guess his age or something but he's just - quite clearly - a directionless troll who has settled on this anti-teacher thing for this particular topic because it'll antagonise the most people.

Also this.

The casino I work with has at least 10 people who quit being teachers because they make more money for less hours as a dealer. Something is incredibly wrong with how we pay teachers.

What is the average salary of a teacher in the US, because here in Ontario, full-time starts at around 40k, but essentially doubles after 10 years or so, and the pension is one of the best around. Canadian values, of course.

Money isn't the reason I wanted to become a teacher (still in teachers college), but I definitely won't be in poverty when I get to that point, other than because of my student loans.

Depends on the area. Suburbs likely start you around 40k, but rural areas will be mayyyybe 30k. Private schools pay pretty poorly too.

And after 10 years, you're looking at around a 10k increase. Maybe a little more, depending on pay scale.

Now, these numbers vary wildly state-to-state. Places like Oklahoma have been vastly underpaid and strike as a result. Virginia, especially northern Virginia, pays a lot better than other states.

My girlfriend is a special education teacher working at one of the lowest paying districts in Ohio. She has had shoulder issues she is trying to recover from, wears a sling, and her principal who conspired to get her fired last year (with evidence from e-mails they left around to try and get someone they knew her job) purposefully forced her to watch undiagnosed children without IEPs and she told one he can't have a doughnut before he finishes the rest of his breakfast and he proceeded to rip off her sling and attack her hurt shoulder, injuring her further. The principal blamed her for it because she thinks she should have just given the kid a doughnut in the middle of being assaulted and refused to follow Ohio union protocol and inform the police, parent, and superintendent she was attacked by this student. They have told her after the fact that the student can be violent.

She is paid less almost $30k a year for this shit. The only saving grace is if she sticks it out this last year, she gets $17k off her student loans because of working in low income schools for five years.

Regardless, she is getting the union involved and considering legal action.
