So it looks like people are hitting back the second they hear vagina, which is pretty understandable. I probably would too. I wavered on whether to go blue but I was pretty proud of the script I put together. I talked to a lot of native speakers and I was really surprised how much looking like a penis and looking like a vagina is a hot take. As far as I can tell, Im the first person to see as a butt. Future episodes will have less genital humor, so this isn't a huge concern to me.

When I self critique, I can see toward the end of my video I become a little less awkward and stiff. What I previously thought of as me doing "dry humor" seems to just come off as me looking nervous. I also think I failed to explain a lot of characters more basically in the interest of speed (I dont even say what means, which totally makes the joke very confusing to anyone who doesn't already know chinese) I def don't want to be a channel that spends too long explaining anything, but I will focus on explaining more basics in the future.

Also, I said my name wrong at the beginning of the video so thats cool too.

if you're being serious about teaching someone, you can't do something like that. Imagine a mom pulling up a tutorial for a kid and pulls up yours. Vagina talk just came out of no where

if you're trying to be comedic, that audience is not trying to learn something as intricate as chinese. let alone for 6 minutes. French with Pierre on All That (only other example I can think of at the moment) was less than a minute each time, and we knew what we were in for. And it wasn't as serious as you're being explaining origins and shit

you're shutting off two giant audiences by trying to combine them in this way

while this is true, and some of the criticism in this topic looks to be somewhat valid, you also have to remember that board 8 is a really small niche population mostly filled with EXTREME outliers. changing your entire production process to cater to their criticism may not get you the level of mainstream viability that you may be aiming for.

he does need to fix the lighting. if you legitimately believe that youtube is a place where there are no people who want to watch videos that have sex jokes in them you're just flat out wrong.

that wasn't listed in your initial criticisms though so I assume you're doing some dumb herd mentality thing where you're sticking up for all of the criticism in this topic because you felt like I was attacking your criticism directly.

The sex joke stuff actually made me watch for a bit longer than I normally would have once I saw the subject, since I wasn't expecting it, but then it got old pretty fast and I was like "I don't want to learn Chinese through sex jokes anyway" and clicked away

It caught my attention, but not necessarily in a good way since I feel like if I was serious about the learning portion I would have clicked away sooner

I got 45 seconds in. The Vagina and Penis thing didn't bother me, but after the fifth "uuuh, ummm" I was out. Needs to be more rehearsed, or quick cut to remove those parts.

And yes, the lighting is quite bad. The back drop entirely isn't great. You could do this from your PC chair and just have half of the screen be a white background, much better way of doing it if you have no great recording space.

Hopefully you see this as helpful criticism and not just me crapping on your video. Feedback can do wonders, but never force yourself to do something you're uncomfortable with or don't see the value in.

thanks wg. I ultimately chose to leave the majority of ums in because it's legit the way I talk. I cut it if I thought it was going to be detrimental but I had to make a choice between many cuts or less cuts and more of a weird amateur tone. I stand by my descision but hopefully a little practice can cut down on the ums in the future

I disagree a bit with cutting all of the uhs and ums. It keeps it from feeling too uptight and after school special. Obviously you want to work to minimize them a bit, but I thought they fit well with your style of speaking and made it feel more natural and like you were talking to and not at people
