I wouldn't say that. Most nurses and doctors seem to genuinely want to help people. Just so happens that they're well-meaning cogs in a greed machine. Insurance companies and hospitals are definitely overly greedy. But the people working with the patients care for the most part.

That's because they expect your health insurance to cough that money up. I've heard that hospitals can be negotiated to a much lower price if you don't have insurance though. Luckily I haven't had to test that theory yet...

Two years later, the family said they were handed the bill: $18,836.

If my baby got special treatment, OK, Jang Yeo-im, the babys mother, told Vox. But he didnt. So why should I have to pay the bill?

The report pointed out that the family was charged more than $15,000 for trauma activation.

The fee, according to the report, is due to the hospitals response to a potentially serious visit. These charges can range from $1,000 to $50,000, according to the report. One expert likened the charge to the Wild West.

Hospitals defend the charge by essentially saying it costs money to keep a good response team on hand.

It's excessive considering the level of care rendered, but it's not quite the same thing as bilking somebody on basic charges which is illegal in the US.

As opposed to other nations where doctors work for free and nobody charges for medical supplies, right? >_>

It's the same shit at the end of the day. People need to get paid, but the US you pay on the front-end whereas other nations you're paying out of your taxes. Under both systems, you have people working the hospitals who care about your welfare and others who are disinterested. And, under both systems, you have third-parties making decisions which could result in you living or dying. However, unlike some nations, the US doesn't sign your death warrant by refusing treatment then restricting you from seeking that treatment outside of the country.

One recent example:

NHS is basically this. Japan forces suppliers to charge a reasonable amount too. A lot of countries run hospitals as a necessary service rather than a profitable venture.

That's deeply disingenuous. The government has more power than the individual so the government can, and does, demand a good price that still keeps companies afloat.

Of course it's not fair, but also of course brainwashed conservatives blinded by resentment will justify anything. You can't approach the health care debate with a shed of empathy and come out thinking that situations like this are ok which is one of the many reasons why conservatives bend over backwards to justify things like this because if they can't then they have to reckon with the fact that they support an inhuman political machine that grinds its most vulnerable people into dust.

It costs less to get a sexual transition into a woman.

thats enough money for a semester at a decent college.

No, they'd prefer not to have to be bankrupted by outrageous fees because they tried to err on the side of caution. If anything, this sort of thing causes more babies to die, since parents don't want to take them to see doctors unless it's absolutely necessary.

Well luckily they shouldn't have to be since the article says they were tourists. They can just refuse to pay since there would be no way the hospital can get money from them.
