This is kind of the problem with the big teams. They can look like shit, scrape through and then then turn it around in the knockout stages. It's why they are the big teams

Also why England have been so disappointing in the past as a lot of the other big teams have done that whereas England never really did.

Because this is a world cup. After the world cup, you go back to your club teams where maybe you play with one of those Brazilians you just humiliated 12 - 1. Also remember that there's no timeouts in soccer. In the first half when Germany is starting to pull away, they don't really have time to convene and just be like "should we stop scoring?" At that point if you have a chance to score a goal in the world cup semifinals you're taking it. At halftime, the team had a chance to really dissect what it was that was happening and make the conscious decision "let's ease off the gas a little bit" I mean they can't just let brazil have the ball 100% of the time from then on, they still have to play the game. That's why they scored 2 more times. If they just stopped doing anything completely that would have been equal humiliation. They needed to walk a fine line between playing too hard and not playing hard enough.

That's fair from a game management standpoint but 7-1 was humiliation. Why not set some historic records in the process?

I am always astounded by how consistent results in soccer are given how it feels like many games are decided by a matter of inches. Yet, year after year the same teams always seem to wind up in the late stages of the tournaments.

They started making horrible calls and bad time management but yes they didn't let up like Germany it was an example.

And Germany won. It probably increased their win probability not to press further too hard at 5-0 up. Attacking aggressively in soccer also increases the chances of your opponent scoring. Even if the odds of a comeback might only be .001%, why settle for that when you can make it .0001% by playing safe?

Acting like 7-1 isn't already a monumental loss. It matched Brazil's biggest ever loss and was against a Brazil team who were unbeaten in 62 home games which is already a ridiculous number

It is unlikely we ever see a similar result involving such big teams in our lifetime. Maybe a 4 or 5 goal game but not 7 and not in that fashion.

A heavy beat down is almost worse when the other team has to take pity on you.
