Managed to avoid it for over 10 years, so I guess that's commendable.

tl;dr: I pointed out my MIL's hypocrisy when she started talking about how her daughter (my wife's sister) holds unreasonable grudges, since she does the same thing. Now, she says she can no longer view me as a son-in-law and friend. She says she has to regard our relationship as employer/employee since she babysits for my wife and I.

She's pretty much proving my point.

Some backstory (Names changed to protect the innocent): My mother-in-law (Cindy) has harbored a grudge against my wife's best friend (Becky), going on two decades now. This grudge predates my meeting my wife (Dave) by a considerable stretch of time.

The catalyst for this grudge? In a moment of drunken stupidity, Becky mentioned that Cindy's boyfriend at the time was a lot younger than her. That's it. Later, this grudge would be exacerbated by Dave choosing to live with Becky while she went to college. Cindy took this personally, even though the decision made sense as both Dave and Becky went to the same college, and the college plus Dave's job were closer to Becky's house. Cindy saw this as Becky "stealing" her daughter away...

This is far from Cindy's only grudge. Just the earliest example I'm aware of.

Now, my sister-in-law (Fergie) dated Cindy's neighbor briefly a few years ago, but the neighbor ended it because, much like Cindy, Fergie is batshit insane.

Couple weeks back, Cindy's father died, neighbor shows up at the funeral to press F, and Fergie loses her shit, at the church while they're wheeling the casket in, demands Cindy force the neighbor to leave.

Yesterday, Cindy was venting to me about this, and I mentioned that she has this same personality trait, pointing out her issue with Becky as an example. I knew it was a mistake the moment the words left my mouth.

In 10 years, I've never had an issue with Cindy. We had, by all accounts, a loving and respectful relationship. I knew she was in therapy and had some deep issues she was working through, but never imagined I'd be one of her grudges, but here I am.

Mental illness can be a real bitch. Not sure how to play my cards now.

Pity something as simple as a statement would make some folks snap like that, especially after a 10 some years positive relationship. Do you regret making that statement to your mother-in-law or feel at some point she needs to be made aware of it?

Not exactly on the same level but some of my friends have certain bad habits that I am not sure if they're aware of. One friend in particular I do question myself if/when I'll eventually point it out to him.

I do regret it, because I was aware of her issues before we had this conversation and should have known it could have backfired like this. I don't know if she'll ever come around to being "okay" with me. This could be a life sentence.

I've apologized for upsetting her, but I'm not going to beat myself up over it. If she doesn't accept my apology, things will be strained and awkward between us until she does.

Be careful giving your friend advice. I told my old roommate about his bad breath and he really appreciated it. But we're thick as thieves. Gotta really know who you're talking to and if they can handle the criticism you're dishing out. Unfortunately, I forgot my MIL can't handle criticism.

My mother in law hates me too.
She's a huge hypocrite. She thinks her opinions are the only ones that matter. She's stupid as a brick. She outright Refuses to listen to others.
And she judges people on really dumb things such as their names despite the fact that she has never even met or even seen a picture of said person.

She is just impossible to reason with and has the most toxic personality. She also dresses like a 20 year old even though she's well over 60.

She also does really stupid shit like never wear any hats even when it's really fucking cold outside.
The reason for that? She doesn't want to her hair to get messed up by the headwear even though she has very short hair which means the probability of her hair getting messed up is Very low.

I guess she'd rather get hypothermia than get a slightly messy hair *shrugs*

Given her condition I suppose all you can really do is let her know that you hold no hard feelings and when she's ready perhaps she'll come round. Not sure what more you can do.
