And now I feel like X4 is better than X5. X5 was borderline terrible for me. So much wonky platforming. X5 and X6 suck eggs, I've never played X7 (Not that I'm in a rush to do so) and X8 was only okay. Leans a bit more on the good side but it doesn't even get close to touching those first four. It was an overly simple game with some fluff and cutscenes to make it look like more than it was IMO. X5 was trash. X6 was virtually unplayable with how bad it was. I did not play X7 or X8. Zero series is good aside for the quirky chips and elf systems (the difficulty varies so drastically depending on what you do, it's hard to tell how it's meant to be played unless you consider doing everything perfectly to be the real game). the ZX series is underrated, especially the first one. I really liked the "Metroidvania-lite" elements.
