Just the meal. Tax doesn't count as revenue for the business, so it shouldn't be included in tipping considerations.

It's on both, because the server's tip out to the bar/bussers/etc is based upon both. Also I tip 20% because I personally feel that those who work full time should not be living in poverty regardless of which profession they are able or qualified to obtain.

I don't tip based on percentages, I just tip $4 or 5 plus enough change to make it an even dollar amount.

I tip 25 percent at least for decent service because I'm not cheap. If the bill is under 15 I'll usually leave at least 5

Being forced to share tips with non tipped employees such as the bussers is illegal. Bartenders as well if they are getting paid as a non tipped employee.

I don't think they're worried about the tax. They seemed to be worried about if they're tipping the right amount or not. Tipping that extra amount based on tax once or twice isn't bad. But it can add up over time...

If you pay with a card at a restaurant you can just hit a button to have it calculate the tip for you based on percent. Usually 15 20 and other. You don't have to do shit yourself

But fair warning that's on the post-tax amount

It's not like it's hard, but say your bill is 157.30 and you wanted to tip 20%. I'd just go with 30, rather than 31.46.

Rule of thumb is to double the tax as your tip. But taxes are so damn high in California so doubling it would be silly (unless the service was insanely good).

I usually tip 15% though, I round it out to that amount. If they are extremely lazy though and the service is absolute trash.. then they get less than 10%. I'm not mean enough to leave them no tip...

I'll never understand this. Get trash service, and still reward them with a tip.

In that case I'd do 32 if I wanted to tip 20

Or 31.70 to make it all nice and even

Spoken like someone who's never worked in a restaurant. Not saying it's ok to give rude service or anything like that but there are plenty of potential reasons that may be outside the servers or bartenders hands for you getting service that wasn't up to your standards. In my experience, there is very rarely an instance where a server or bartender will intentionally give you bad service but customers tend to take everything personally when something goes wrong

There's a difference between slow service and a server trying to do their best because of a backed up kitchen and a server that's hardly there and rude when they are.
