It's more the aging population. Low birthrates and an aging population means that steadily more people leave the workforce than enter it.

And would that be a major issue? If theres less working people, I would gather their economy would shrink, but since there would be fewer people, would it matter if the economy shrinks proportionally?

It's a major issue if you want to grow your economy. And developed countries don't exactly aim for a state of equilibrium. Steady growth is important.

Developed societies built on capitalist principles are like sharks. If they stop moving, they drown.

I always thought economies only need to grow if the population is also growing, like a proportional relationship, so if the population goes down it would make sense if economic growth rate also diminishes. I didnt realize capitalist economies had to consistently grow for it t survive, I dont think I still understand the reason though

Perhaps the easiest way to think about it is like this: Economy, especially of the capitalist variety, isn't like a water tank. You don't fill it up to a certain level and then turn the water off. Economy is a machine. If the machine is working properly, economy grows. If not, it begins to fail.

It's never been a matter of "needing" 7b people and, more importantly, if 100% automation did occur -- which it won't -- there wouldn't be need for *any* humans. Nor would mass starvation or violence be an issue if you had 7b people in a fully automated system.

Not a realistic concern. If a system is run badly, it'll fail no matter how small the population. And, if a system is run incredibly, it can sustain far more than we have now.

There would be substantial short-term problems. As for long-term impact, it's hard to say. While there'd certainly be more available land with fewer people, there's no guarantee that there'd be more wealth since the country's economy would shrink as well (and, as opportunity dwindles, the nation's best and brightest would likely leave for other nations). More pragmatically, it would also make Japan more likely to import workers so the ethnic-Japanese population might shrink but other groups would grow. As it stands, Japan's foreign worker program has grown at an unprecedented rate.

If they are refusing to change from this. Then the natural way of increasing their population is already failing so artificial insemination has to be the way to go. The men should just yank one out in their breaks between shifts at sperm banks and the increase of wet nurses will be needed for the women during their pregnancy periods.

Isnt it the reverse? The stress of everyday life and expectations led young people to retreat from life in general.

Again, the previous generations was still affected by the war, and it makes sense that they workso hard to restore the nations economy.

Todays kids see european 5 days workweek, with several weeks worth of vacation, plus they were born in the time of economic prosperity, unlike the boomers equivalent of japan thay live in post war, a lost war japan.

They dont see the point is in the previous grind that sucks the soul outta them

I cant say for sure, as I've never talked to anyone that lives in Japan about this, but I just can't see anyone preferring things that way.

Seems to me it may be more like something you just accept as a way of life. Similar to working 50-60 hour weeks at factories in America, really. You'd prefer to have more time at home, but if the boss man says come in, you oblige, yeah?

The stress on the healthcare market alone without having younger workers to prop up services for the elders will destroy them. Schools and universities are shutting down by the hundreds every year to convert to elder care facilities.
