Japan suffers 37th consecutive year of low birthrate, Japanese people may become extinct someday

Turns out that Japanese citizens are aware of their fate, but there seems to be no solution to avert the impending disaster.

Japan has long struggled with a rapidly declining birthrate, and though it isnt the worst in the world Singapore being the lowest it is far from solving a complex problem that has plagued the country for decades.

What makes Japans situation so dire is that its also home to the worlds highest population of elderly people, and Japanese people themselves have varied opinions on why theyve arrived at this predicament. But theres worse to come.

The latest probe at the problem by Japans Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications revealed that as of 1 April 2018, the number of children under the age of 15 was estimated to be 15.53 million (7.95 million boys and 7.58 million girls).

2017 already saw a despairingly record low of 15.7 million children, but this years number brought that count even lower. Thats a steady decline for 37 years straight since 1987.

Additionally, the proportion of children to total population has continued dropping annually for the past 44 years to the current 12.3 percent, the lowest ever since 1954.

Breaking it down at the prefectural level, Tokyo was the only prefecture to experience a hike in children population, a pattern thats been repeated for the past four consecutive years. Beach-filled Okinawa pulled its weight with the highest proportion of children at 17.1 percent, while Akita Prefecture came in the lowest at 10.1 percent.

Shocked by the news and faced with possible extinction, netizens aired their grievances:

Our declining birthrate began more than two decades ago, right? The country simply isnt motivated at all. The people truly bothered by it are the ones who are old themselves, so it wont change.

They say that we continue to have less children, but raising children in Japan is really tough. Im concerned about student loans, as I have to work to repay it. If I lose my job bearing a child, whos going to repay it? It takes about 20 years to finish repayment, and after that itll be late childbearing. Having children isnt realistic.

Of course. Almost every Japanese has to scrape by with income tax, municipal tax, pension, and health insurance payments. If you dont work, the only option the country gives you is committing suicide. We dont have the privilege of having children. More than 50 percent of ordinary people are desperate.

Japan is currently experiencing the repercussions of decades of low birthrate, as evidenced by its aging workforce. Its citizens are suffering as a result of that, but what is astonishing is the lack of ample measures from the government to combat this silent killer of countries, with later generations experiencing harsher eras than the last.

Most western nations prop up a low birthrate by taking in immigrants. Japan's reluctance to do so is half the reason why they have a population crisis to begin with.

I guess California is going extinct too:

http://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-ln-birth-rate-20161220-story.html

California's birthrate dropped to its lowest level ever in 2016, according to data released by the state's Department of Finance.

Between July 2015 and July of this year, there were 12.42 births per 1,000 Californians, the agency said this week. The last time the birthrate came close to being that low was during the Great Depression, when it hit 12.6 per 1,000 in 1933.

This is what late capitalism looks like

Capitalism literally culminates in the collapse of society. It crushes the general population by design, slowly moving its sights up the economic ladder over generations, until there's nobody and nothing left to prop up the extremely wealthy and everything left comes crashing down.

I blame the herbivore men. Man wasn't designed to live on salad! >_>

More generally, a shrinking birthrate might only be a temporary problem anyway assuming that the population stabilizes later on. And, of course, it's hard to ignore that a lot of the problem is tied to the economy.

And would that be a major issue? If theres less working people, I would gather their economy would shrink, but since there would be fewer people, would it matter if the economy shrinks proportionally?

It's a major issue if you want to grow your economy. And developed countries don't exactly aim for a state of equilibrium. Steady growth is important.

More wealth probably wouldn't matter if the population is tanking. I mean, wealth isn't just a public water fountain; it's something earned and affected by the economy. The economy is determined by the population and the work force, so if there's fewer workers there's fewer consumers. Does that make sense?

I'm no economist or whatever, so I won't prod too deep into the subject. I just feel like fewer people does not equal better "wealth."

I always thought economies only need to grow if the population is also growing, like a proportional relationship, so if the population goes down it would make sense if economic growth rate also diminishes. I didnt realize capitalist economies had to consistently grow for it t survive, I dont think I still understand the reason though
