Almost ALL of the dog meat restaurants in PyeongChang at the Winter Olympics have disregarded a government request to STOP serving DOG!!

South Koreans believe consuming one million dogs a year is a summertime delicacy as the greasy red meat is boiled for tenderness and it increases energy and health

But activists launched campaigns to ban dog consumption with online petitions urging boycotts of the games over it

Local authorities asked the 12 dog meat restaurants to stop serving the food in exchange for subsidies but only 2 complied.

A government official said that they faced complaints from the operators stating it threatens their livelihood if they did that and some initially shifted to selling pork instead of dog but sales plunged sharply and went back to dog

Signs advertising dog meat such as boshintang (health boosting soup), yeongyangtang (nutrient soup) or sacheoltang (year round soup) have been replaced with yeomsotang (goat soup) to avoid giving a bad impression to foreigners..

Dog meat is officially "detestable" by Seoul, as is snake but it has no legal ramifications

South Korea tried hard to persuade them to change their menus as most see dogs as pets instead of livestock

Olympians were HORRIFIED with what they say as many are campaigning to stop the dog meat trade and ADOPTING dogs

As a vegan I find the outrage to be hilarious

People don't expect there to be any cultural differences when they travel to another country?

Also, I've never eaten dogmeat(and never will), but if people in other countries like the taste then let them eat whatever they want(except humanmeat obviously).

First off....no. Could never eat dog, but then again there's lots of "exotic meats" I'd never want but other cultures enjoy.

It's not exactly good meat. Kind of silly to eat it tbh. Like Shark Fin soup it's stupid to eat something where the rest is probably not used.

It wouldn't be my first choice but if push comes to shove and it is a matter of survival.

Dogs smell awful, I can't see myself eating anything that smelled like dog.

Maybe in the most dire of survival circumstances, but I'd have to be at that crossroad to say for certain.

Was kinda thinking the same. Eating beef is part of the norm for us but I'd imagine for some Hindus, eating it is just as bizarre to them as eating dog is to us.

The type of dogs used for meat are not the kind of dogs used as pets. As in the people complaining would never want to keep them as pets if they saw them before they were processed.

It's kind of like eating kangaroo in Australia or deer in the states. Yes, it is kind of a grey area, but not nearly as horrible as people make it out to be.

Ehhhhh.... it's kind of an extreme difference considering it's a major taboo. People are okay with minor differences, like a country peeling the skin off its fruit instead of eating it with the skin, not something that violates a belief.

No.....I'd never eat dog meat primarily because I abhor the idea. I see them as pets and not livestock.

Also, as it is, I have a sensitive sense of smell with regards to meat; that's why I can't have pork, lamb or duck. I reckon dog meat would probably smell......

If it were a decision between starving to death or eating dog, of course I'd eat dog. But that applies to humans too. I'd be absolutely disgusted, but I'd do it to survive.

every religion, for one reason or another, considers some animals as sacred. so why don't we get the same outrage from, say Hindus and Muslims, visiting Korea, who won't eat beef or pork. That is, should Koreans also ban cow and pig meat for this occasion?

What kind of dogs are used? I know a lot of animals can be considered dogs (like foxes and other like creatures).

I don't wanna search the internet because I don't want to stumble across any pictures lol

I remember the sochi olympics where people were shocked they had to poop, wipe and deposit the paper in the trash rather than flush it down. people kept on acting like that was some huge problem with the housing when a lot of the world does the same thing.

I feel like westerners owe a lot to South Korea without even realizing it. Most every cell phone and electronic has a piec einside it that was made or designed in South Korea. Apple/sony/microsoft it doesnt matter it all has SK tech inside, somewhere. They're the current global leader. I mean, fuck, it's the entire reason the Olympics are even being held there. SK is on a roll right now.

So to me it's rather ironic that people are using South Korean tech (social media via cell phones) to imply that South Koreans are uncivilized.

Really, anyone from the west, especially the US, should stfu when our food culture is industrialized goop and stacking chickens on top of one another to save space.
