I can guarantee you that most Younger people don't have a good or even great signature because most of what they write is online

yet I always see or hear older people shaming them because one day You'll have to sign something in real life on paper and then where will your computer be huh?

feels too much like the older generation is holding tightly to the past and won't give up because they refuse to admit their way of doing things is becoming outdated and obsolete

I can see bad handwriting being a potential issue but in a signature? So long as one is consistent that's probably good enough. Hell, my boss sign off our projects in some bizarre way that in no way represent his name and one city actually questioned what the squiggly lines were.

That probably applies to any generation. There's supposedly a quote of someone yay back complaining about pens and how children will not know how to write with chalk without getting it on their sleeves.

As a whole our generation seems pretty good at accepting and adapting to new technology but I wouldn't doubt it if some of us will still complain some decades from now.

it's not something that should control one's life in my opinion....

yeah but what I mean is that despite all of that the older generation doesn't seem to accept that doing everything by pen and paper is horribly outdated when it comes to doing one's business

Oh I can agree. My signature is bloody inconsistent even when I attempt to sign it several times in a row. I've noticed it seems the more I try the worse it gets. I kinda just have to "go with the flow" so to speak to make it look consistent.

No matter how "outdated and obsolete" the old way of doing things maybe it's still good to learn from your elders and have that skill. Even more so a essential skill like handwriting. For whatever reason you may need to write things manually and being too reliant on technology is never a good thing as for whatever reason said technology may not be available when you need it. My handwriting is trash though I believe it's still legible for the most part so eh I don't care. All that matters is I have that skill.

Anyway, I feel the same. Not to mention, I switch schools between grades, so I was learning it for more years in a row. Which sucked, because then I started using it for everything for years. And cursive was not meant to be used for most things...

As for my signature, it's semi-legible if you try to read it. But most f the time, it doesn't matter because my name if printed somewhere close by. And my signature is easily disguisable to me from forgeries. Only one person can even come close to making a signature look like mine. Haha.

Yeah, bad handwriting can be a pretty issue. While there's less use for handwriting today, being able to jot down a note you can read later (a major problem for me), etc, is still very important. Plus great penmanship is a skill unto itself which people appreciate.

NightMareBunny posted...

You know that typewriters were a thing for like a century, right? It's not like pen & paper have been the *only* way people did everything. Businesses would hire skilled typists. However, that didn't mean that handwriting wasn't important then and now.

Mead posted...

Yeah, that I never really got. And, frankly, I have a hard enough time reading most peoples' print handwriting, cursive just makes it more likely to be sloppy and illegible.

I used cursive all the time and it's still my preferred way to write out something long. When you use it a lot, it really is a lot faster than printing.

My signature is consistent and readable. But signatures barely matter for most daily things. I can literally make a random shape or just print initials on most things and no one cares.

I don't have a huge use for it but I'm not going to get my panties in a bunch over it being taught. We are taught many things that we rarely use. I want to teach my kids cursive anyway but will not push it if they don't care.

We have a lot of old family documents, letters, framed family trees that are written in a beautiful hand. It is kind of said that art is being lost.

I took a calligraphy class in college as a fine art major. I don't use it at all but it seemed to help further eye-hand coordination and attention to detail that lent itself to my other classes.

it doesn't matter what you write when you make a signature in most cases. You can literally make a big X mark and if you say that's your signature, then that's your signature. The important part is you being in agreement with whatever you sign which is what your mark represents

However things like credit card receipts, a mismatched signature can be used as a cause to dispute a charge, essentially 'that's not me who signed that!'

Also banks still use signatures as a backup identification method. And suppose you still write checks, disparities between signatures that get picked up by the bank's software will often lead to investigation on wtf is going on with that persons usage of their check writing privileges

There's other cases I'm sure, but those seem to be the most relevant to most people
