Other: figured them, applied for my state property tax rebate. Since I'll owe federal self-employment tax, I won't send my federal return until the 4/17 deadline.

If you'll get money back, it makes sense to file early. If you have to pay, it makes sense to wait for the deadline. If it's mixed, like for me, I file state early and use my state rebate to pay my federal tax at the deadline.

Typically making a lot of money and not spending it (I.E. saving). Thankfully since I am a homeowner I am pretty much always guaranteed a refund even if I am saving about 50% of everything I make.

The year I ended up owing like 2k was because I worked multiple jobs and one taxed me like they were my only employer. It put my income high enough that I should have been paying more withholding each time.

Then by the time I did my taxes I was down to 1 job and no savings so I paid that off very slowly. It sucked.

I'm still deciding between doing taxes on my own again or consulting a CPA. My car is the only major item I have with a loan going on so I am fairly sure I can get by with the EZ form again. I think my mother and sister just feel I can either make a mistake any/or a CPA might be able to squeeze out a bigger tax return.

When it comes to additional deductions or taxes, I mention whatever donations I have made but it usually isn't enough to make a difference. The amount of Use Tax I report is usually less than $50 as well I think. I can only guess for some folks they take the highest donation deduction they can that doesn't involve showing proof and I am sure most people do not report Use Tax. Kinda wonder how most CPA would approach this.

Basically the more money you make the more taxes you owe, obvs. But the thing is you kinda get to tell your job how much of each paycheck to withhold to go towards paying taxes. But, by accident, you might tell your job to withhold less money than you need to owe, so come the end of the fiscal year you'll owe the government some $$$ out of your pocket. Tax brackets give an idea of how much you owe based on what you make.

I do that as well. It does result in me getting a larger tax return and realistically that $1,000ish that I usually get back would just sit in my bank. Whatever money I have set aside for investment is already drawn regularly from my bank account independent of what I get back on my tax return.

If you are self-employed, 1099'd, or own a business you can end up paying because you were expected to keep track of your own tax deductions.

People who are good with money will always owe or break even. They have the willpower to get more money per paycheck, invest it, and make more in the long run. I'm not sure how much more one can make that way.

Personally, I just have the maximum taken out and don't sweat whether I'll owe or not.
