why not just give Cousins a contract? what am I missing

I'm pretty sure that they've been trying to come to a contract agreement for years now but both sides have been far apart, hence why Cousins has played under the franchise tag this season and last.

The Redskins would have to pony up something in the ballpark of $35 mil to do that again for next season, so instead of going into the same old song and dance about contract negotiations, the Redskins made first move by acquiring the same, if not better, quality of QB.

Whether the decision to immediately sign Smith to a four year extension, which appears to be at-market at worst, or include a young CB, who rated well in advanced metrics, prove to be mistakes remain to be seen.

I honestly would rather have Cousins at this point than Smith. Four years younger and given Washington doesn't have the same amount of talent KC does his numbers look pretty impressive

I feel like he goes to Arizona, too

Jaguars would make a big mistake to sign Cousins. He's overpriced and Blake Bortles had a career season in 2017. Dumping all that money into Cousins would guarantee they will have to shed some of their top talent in the next few years.

Kirk Cousins should go to Arizona, Cleveland, or Denver. Those teams have the most need for what he brings to the table.

Really the issue is that QBs in general are ridiculously overpaid. I mean I get why they are but the notion of having to pay a mid level QB 27m a year for 5 years is crazy

Cousins should go to New England on the vet minimum to back up and eventually take over for Brady imo.
