I know there are two active VGM ranking threads, but doesn't that just make the rest of you wish you could rank stuff, too? Still, who wants to commit to the massive overhead of listening to and separating 100 songs, doing write-ups, plus dealing with obnoxious people obfuscating your rules about what to nominate, etc? (NFUN, Jeff Zero, and maybe zyxyz0 do.)
Fortunately, for the rest of us, there's a solution! You, along with 23 of your peers (plus me) can rank just a few short lists of 5, and then we compile the results into overall standings. It's simple, really. ...okay, it's a smidge more complicated than that, but I do most of the hard stuff. It has, however, been ages since I've done a reverse ranking thread. People usually like them. The idea is pretty close to what I describe above. 1) People nominate five songs. 2) I assign a number to every song. 3) I make several lists of those numbers, partition them into fives, and dole them back out to the board. 4) People agree to take a block, rank them 1-5, and then have the option to do more. We keep going until each of the lists are complete. This will be the nomination thread. For this particular reverse ranking, we will operate with a simple twist: * I will accept the first 25 nominations. * If you nominate, you MUST nominate five songs. * They must all be from the same game. * You may not pick the same game as any other user. * There are no series restrictions. * I humbly request that you either agree to rank five blocks, or tell me up front that you would prefer more or fewer rankings, to help me decide how to split the lists. In the end, I will matriculate the scores not just for the individual songs, but also for the soundtracks, so you might consider viewing your nomination as a chance to decide what game has the superior soundtrack (because I've totally never done a contest about that or anything), or you might take this opportunity to see what the board thinks of five different songs from the same game in case you were, say, debating what to nominate for the next VGMC. Does that cover everything? I hope so, but ask away. Man why do I have to choose 5 here. Doubt I've chosen the 5 most popular songs here (I wasn't trying to), but I hope people at least like these ones. I tried to at least pick a variety of styles instead of going all-in on the emotional soundtracks that are usually what I like. Also intentionally avoided choosing songs that I nominated in other ongoing ranking projects, though I'm not committed to that restriction. I'm open to changing these if someone really likes a song I left out though. (I like many songs which I had to leave out...)

The songs get labeled 1 to 125. 2. I make (probably) five lists with the numbers 1 to 125, but arranged in very different orders. 3. I chop up those lists into groups of 5. 4. Each person that reports in for ranking is assigned to one of the lists, and I ask them to take the first block of 5 songs that is available. 5. They rank them, and those results get added to a spreadsheet. 6. They hopefully ask for more songs, and I assign them the next block on their list. We keep going until the lists are done. Sometimes I have to get creative at the end because one list isn't getting finished. Hopefully some walk-ons help finish those. The reason for the different lists is simple -- I don't want anyone to rank the same song twice. I arrange the numbers using some math principles, rather than purely randomly, (using the Chinese Remainder Theorem for those who understand that,) so in theory you should get five songs from different parts of the original ordering, and therefore from different games. The respective lists will be different enough that nobody will be pitting the same two songs against each other, either. SIMPLIFIED EXAMPLE: Let's suppose I reduce the project to 9 tracks and everybody is only doing 3 songs, and we only get them ranked 2 times each. So I generate the following two lists: List I: 1-3-5-7-9-2-4-6-8 List II: 1-6-2-7-3-8-4-9-5 Person A gets the first trio of songs on list I, so 1-3-5 Person B gets the first trio on list II, so 1-6-2 Person C comes along, and I put them on list I as well: 7-9-2 Person A finishes and asks for more. Maybe they decided 3>5>1. I then give them 4-6-8. List I is now finished. Ideally the other list(s) will get finished without needing A or C, because there is a distinct likelihood that they would repeat a song if they were given 7-3-8 or 4-9-5. When I put Person A's first group of rankings into the spreadsheet, it will go down as song 3 getting 3 points, 5 getting 2 points, and 1 getting 1 point. The only difference with the actual list is the quantities are larger. I like to do everything in fives. So we have 5^3 songs -- 5 each from 5^2 people. (There's actually a math reason for this part.) Then we rank songs 5 at a time, and I also do 5 lists because that's the minimum it takes to start differentiating songs. There's still a huge tie in the middle, but typically there's a clear winner and loser by the end. Red's Theme was indeed one of the songs, and it was handed out to you on one of the passes (Round 4, to be precise) and you gave it a 5 (5 was the best score for us.) I don't think it was intended as a joke entrant though. It was one of Kenri's choices, and IIRC, he liked it. Pretty sure Eternity was the only true joke entrant we chose. Red's Theme did end up doing pretty poorly when it was over though, it ended up tied for 92nd. Anyway, when I found this spreadsheet more memories came back to me of how the project went. The three of us held a draft among ourselves where we picked songs to ensure no repeats. We did do write-ups, because we had ranked our selections according to our preferences, and I remember including the difference between our opinion and the board's during write-ups. Baba Yetu ended up winning (Dorchadas was robbed. Had a perfect score of all 5s after 4 Rounds, then got a 1 in the final one.) Last Place was Kirby Air Ride - Dense Fog Today. The ones I hear mentioned most frequently on this board are Overdosing Heavenly Blitz and Genuine Devil. I would also personally add Castle of Illusions and The Crimson Stigma, and then the 5th there are a few contenders, but somehow none of them would have been the ones you picked. In fairness Genuine Devil is only not on because I already nominated it for Jeff Zero's topic, and also I was pretty close to using Castle of Illusions instead of The Black Ark which I might change back.
Also worth mentioning maybe is that this isn't actually my top 5. My top 5 probably is something like Cradle Where Feelings Rest, Aster House, Stairway to Gehenna, Magnificence in the Wilderness, and Masquerade of Lies. I had about 10 I found that I liked well enough to consider. Sanctus and Giselle are my personal favorites but Cicio was certainly one of the considerations for the rest.
