Literally at one point in the movie it can be summarized as "The police are hunting L, who is trying to kill Light over a misunderstanding, who is trying to stop Misa who was the mastermind and working with Ryuk"

I thought it was pretty good. Better than the live action japanese movies at least, though that isn't exactly amazing praise. I like that it was different than the anime/manga. Maybe things went by a little too quick, but it's OK.

That being said, No Near means it is the inferior version of the story of course

The Japanese movies are mostly notorious for the awful CGI. From what I understand they're at least decent.

I was referring to the first two movies. I haven't seen L: Change The World either. From what I've seen in other topics about the Netflix Death Note movie, opinions on the Japanese live action movies are fairly positive. People tend to cite the Japanese movies as evidence that it is possible to do a good live action Death Note movie.

It's funny because I feel the opposite, this new movie is proof a decent Death Note live action movie can be made.

I wonder if someone who has never seen Death Note before would think the plot moves fast too? Maybe we only think it is too fast because we've seen the original.

Just watched it

I actually didn't hate it. For a so bad it's good movie, it was pretty damn enjoyable.

The vast majority of it was dumb and broken, but it DID actually have some cool original stuff, which very much impressed me. Particularly Mia going super psycho and trying to kill Light and L killing Light at the end.

The visuals were good too. The editing and angles were very anime and there was clearly influence from the anime, which I didn't expect.

2 things that were dumb but kinda funny

"YOU CAN TRY TO WRITE MY NAME BUT PEOPLE ONLY GET IN 2 LETTERS"

*earlier*
*Reading the death note*
"Rye-yook?"

and

"THIS EVENT IN SEATTLE ONLY AIRED IN SEATTLE SO PEOPLE IN SEATTLE ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO COULD'VE SEEN THIS SEATTLE THING"

*Light and Misa get it off the internet where everyone in the world could've seen it*

Verbatim dialogue of that scene

Mia (seeing the Death Note Light is holding): “Death Note”? What is it?
Light: What is what?
Mia: Your book
Light (looks around uncomfortably): Uh, I can’t tell you.
Mia (whatever look): Okay.
Light: Do you really want to know?
Mia: (pause) Sure.
Light: Okay, then I’ll tell you.

That was the longest most pointless chase scene ever. Although I do like the idea of adding the Yakety Sax music to it.

L bothered me, he wasn't nearly as calm and collected as I expected he'd be. Especially since he seemed more on point at the beginning.

L fucking nailed it in his first few appearances

But yeah they made him wayyy more emotional, which isn't really bad necessarily, but the writing definitely could not back it up at all

Killing Light at the end was still sweet though

I think its backed up by Ryuk laughing his ass off at the end

and its been established that Ryuk carries out the kills, so I figured he was greatly amused by the turn of events when he quoted his catch phrase out of nowhere

I think the goal was to leave it ambiguous in case the movie does well and they want to make a sequel

but if the movie does poorly they can just leave it at that

idk, he hesitated and then started laugh-sobbing. If he was really intending to just kill him, why would he be sobbing?
And if he did that he'd be completely going against the code he made in his first introduction and his first talk with Light. If he did do that, how is he any different from Light? If killing a killer is justified then why was he so hellbent on capturing Kira?

I saw it last night too and thought it was... okay.

I don't know. I mean Willem Dafoe was great in the role. I get the movie wants to make it so you see Light as the "good guy" who is trying to make everything okay again, but it doesn't build upon that premise well enough to really make it work. Like I think it does do a decent job at showing that he wants to do what's right and that he has concerns about the power of the book and lives he doesn't want to take... but at the same time they don't really give L an equal standing ground. Like in the show Light was clearly "the bad guy" and a lot of it worked because of that.

I think the movie is way better if you know the source material. The people who are watching this from scratch are going to be completely confused and turned off in every way probably. But maybe it might pique their interest in the anime?

Anyways I think it's very clear that L kills Light at the end. L was about to shoot him in the face earlier anyways.

Also the hospital scene mirrors Soichiro's death scene in the original story except with roles flipped, and I think there is enough evidence in the movie that they are knowledgeable of the original events and deliberately use pieces of it in this movie.

I agree that Ryuk wasn't nearly as good as other people say (although the performance was great)

But also I do wish there was some reference to Near and Mello, especially considering they showed the orphanage

But really they needed a reference to Mikami, especially since they established the public was obsessed with Kira, like that dude to hit L upside the head when he was about to shoot Light

Rewatching the final scenes again, why would he even kill Light? The whole way it's presented it seems more like it's hinted to any bystanders that MIA was Kira. When L gets to the scene after being knocked out he sees that Light's name and death was on the note... which should exonerate him and paints Mia as Kira who had gotten sick of Light and decided to get rid of him.

The final scene has him looking at a picture of Light and Mia when he hesitated so maybe he realized he had the wrong assumption the entire time and should've been chasing Mia instead. I mean, why wasn't Mia a suspect anyway? What evidence points to Light more than Mia?
