I finished watching Stardust Crusaders a couple days ago.

I read the manga and thought it was decent overall, but not nearly on par with Battle Tendency. Watching through it though, I didn't really get why I thought that. It was really satisfying to watch with great battles, tons of variety, and top-notch animation. I loved it for a while. But then, around when season 2 began, I began to understand why I don't like this as much.

The problem, for me, is how the story was introduced. From almost the very beginning, the heroes are given the task to save Holly. There's not really any build-up to this plotline, it's an immediate goal for the characters to work with. On top of that, a time limit has been placed upon them, creating an immediate sense of urgency. So throughout the entire story, I personally want consistent progression in the plot to make this challenge feel more exciting. It works really well for a while! Many battles occur in the process of traveling, and it's great watching them make progress under these constant handicaps. But eventually, the main plot feels secondary to the fights, rather than a satisfying blend, and we get multiple episodes where the crew is fighting random Dio slaves without any feeling of progression.

If that makes sense I guess. Basically, I don't like how it created an immediate conflict that needed to be completed in a set amount of time, then proceeded to have an episodic structure. The pacing falls off a cliff once they reach Egypt, and it dulls the overall package imo.

That being said, I can't deny how incredible they actually did make these fights. I liked pretty much all of them, so when I wasn't being annoyed by the writing, I could find comfort in some of the most well-done battles in shounen anime. Animation just works for JoJo so much better, that I probably won't bother reading any more of it (I'm halfway through part 5). The stylistic flare and passionate voicework aren't possible in the manga format, and it really creates an awesome viewing experience.

Also, OHHHH NOOOOO

We'll have to see if the animation quality remains. David recently took a shot at later JoJo's art style with a Rohan Kishibe OVA and it was....hideous, to say the least.

And yeah, Stardust certainly is influential, but it's one of the weaker entries in the franchise due to its place as a transitional arc in the JoJo structure, resulting in a real Monster of the Week feel.

I do think I'd like 5 more if it got the anime treatment too

good anime treatment

how much does 6 having one of the worst endings in anything ever of all time affect your ranking?

I think the ending to 6 was...bold.

I imagine if he had gone through with ending JoJo there (it WAS getting pretty low ranking in Jump at the end there), it would have been much, much worse as a true ending.

So I TOTALLY get why people wouldn't like The Reflection, and I think that's totaly viable objectively.

PERSONALLY, anyone shitting on this is a tasteless hack casual.

It certainly doesn't deserve a fucking 5 on MAL, which is basically like a 2/10.

Magi S2 pretty great. There's a big cast from S1 though, so I could understand not remembering everyone. Not remembering Aladdin, Alibaba, Morgiana, and Sinbad would be a little odd though.

Anime is still small scale enough for auteur types to put their imprint on feature films.

As a result, my anime auteur rankings is gonna need some re-adjusting.

Oh right, I also watched Your Name. It was pretty good, but it didn't really blow me away? I dunno, I was expecting more after all the hype it got. Instead it was like, the third best Shinkai I've seen, and also not as good as its cinematic contemporary A Silent Voice. Everything in the movie was pretty likable, pacing was good, scenes were cool. There weren't any really amazing emotional moments though. On the other hand, there weren't many flaws, except that the whole forgetting thing felt pretty contrived. It's always sad when something with a magical/sci-fi component does its best to erase that by the end of the show. So yeah, a good 8/10 movie. I'd be curious to hear from someone who really loved it.

I also gave an 8/solid

My personal guess is why its so loved (besides getting influenced by the hype train). It's a simple but cute story with some twists that are somewhat unexpected. The multiple perspectives makes it relatable for both guys and girls. Obviously the graphics are super amazing but it wasnt for a big time anime movie itd be disappointing. The way the story is paced makes something always happening which is what keeps people watching from start to end.

Generally when just about everything is good that tends to get higher critical scores since theres less to criticize about it.

Yes.

IMO, the humor isn't done quite as well, but the serious parts are just as good if not better. It also suffers some from mediocre animation/music, but that's not too big a deal for a series like this.

I'm giving it the full five stars, might enter my All Time Top 250. This one connected a lot more with me than A Silent Voice, maybe cos I'm a film buff. Though I like A Silent Voice too, for different reasons.

A Silent Voice, comes off as a great adaptation, while Your Name was a great auteur piece.

I haven't rated any Studio Ghibli film above 4*, but I feel comfortable doing so with this Your Name.

It wasn't just that the art was pretty, it's what they did with it that I really enjoyed. I really do hope more films of this kind break out and find this level of success in the future.

Yeah, although I'm guilty of this as well. Filling out a checklist isn't the best way to express a film's true values.

There are many great films I adore, that ignore some aspects that some would consider to be critical.

Your Name, yes it is a bit of an all rounder film if you just use the checklist approach, but there's more to it than that.
