Vice City > 5 >> 4 > San Andreas > 3

Never played 1 or 2.

Vice City was the last game in the series that seemed to truly understand the main appeal of the game - stealing things, causing mayhem, and getting into shootouts - that didn't bog it down with ridiculous mechanics (like San Andreas's million-and-one stat bars) or get distracted with terrible minigames no one was interested in (dating in GTA4, the stock market in GTA5, etc).

San Andreas. I should play it again. I think I have the ps2 version here somewhere. I did download the PC version, played it for ten minutes, realized it wasnt optimized for PC and was just a direct port of the PS2 version so I returned it and got my money back. I was hoping itd be optimized for PC but nah

the psp games were pretty choice for portable GTA, but GTA 2 just has such a special place in my heart. I just wish the DC port had dawn instead of just dusk.

I like San Andreas, but the low camera angles in cars and the physics engine put me off. Vice city and GTA3 tie for best in the series for me. GTA4 had awesome multiplayer but GTA5 I didn't like at all for some reason.

So many polls today.

Vice City!

The soundtrack is the best of all GTA games (though I like the instrumental theme that plays when SA is loading). It's also the easiest GTA game, and as long as you avoid doing the optional Cuban missions, no gangs chase you and try to kill you 24/7.

Saints Row 3.

Actually, my real answer is GTA:Online, for pretty much the same reason I like Saints Row - I vastly prefer being able to make my own character and not be forced to experience my way through the lives of characters I may not even care about or like, making terrible decisions.

This site sort of turned the corner on SA a while back, and we're all mostly too old and bitter to enjoy newer games, so GTAV is out.

Pretty much how I feel, though I might switch SA and 4 depending on my mood.

I wouldn't rank any of the top-down entries against the 3D sandbox games. Treat them as a different series almost.

San Andreas>VC>5>3 havent played the rest though i own 4 and would love to play it if i could without the "games for windows live" bs requirements stopping me. but yeah

San Andreas was my first and i still like it, the stat bars are annoying and requiring certain stats for certain things like "dont be too fat" or "remember to eat" or "increase your breath meter" are annoying, and i hate a couple of specific missions, but otherwise the game felt the most complete to me

VC is a close second the better game IMO but the world is a bit small and the missions a bit bland, the setting and soundtrack is nice though.

5 is fantastic but just not as good as SA or VC

and 3 just felt like the first step towards what would become SA and VC, great game but some annoying controls and missions hamper it a bit.

Uh huh. And you could buy property and crazy weapons/vehicles in Vice City without needing to go to the stock market first.

Which kind of proves my point.

3 always felt like a diamond in the rough to me. It was a decent base, but every subsequent game expanded upon it and did it better. I played 3 after VC and SA and it felt very dated even then.

4 was... I don't know, there? I agree with Far-Queue in that I might swap it with SA depending on my mood. SA had more problems, but also more genuinely good aspects. 4 felt like it was a very rote GTA game, with a few problems of its own.

While I agree the game is dated, I still think it's a great game. I actually got 3, VC, and SA on PS4 a year ago and platinum'd 3 and enjoyed almost every bit of it still (the ambulance missions made me rage).

4 was bogged down with bad gameplay mechanics (I hate the car handling and gun mechanics), and people who have apparent separation issues so they call you every 2 minutes to hang out.

I never used cheats and I never had issues getting enough cash to buy places after I'd invested in the first one. Plus, the properties you did acquire actually brought in income reasonably quickly.

This in contrast to GTA V - by the time I finished the game, I had literally gone through every mission and every way of collecting money other than the stock market and I was still a long, long, LONG way away from being able to afford Michael's most expensive properties.

I'm not really qualified to answer the poll. I think 3 is the only one I've actually played through entirely on my own file. I pretty much have beat/seen everything in Vice City, but on my friend's file that we both played on. I've seen a lot of San Andreas, but most of it was watching other people and I rarely played it myself. I actually tried playing through it a few months back but I didn't find it very enjoyable; I don't know, maybe GTA games just don't appeal to me anymore. I've barely played any of 4 or 5.

If I had to pick, I guess I'd say Vice City. I'm more familiar with 3, but it's too basic, even in comparison to VC. The main thing I love about VC is how confidently it embraces a particular aesthetic and nails it in a way that all the other entries don't really achieve (from what I can tell).

You do if you want to have anywhere near enough money to buy all the properties without grinding your life away.

It's that issue that changes the stock market from something that's pointless and boring, but ultimately harmless (like the Yoga minigame) to something that actually harms the game as a whole.

It's still shitty design. It's adding an extra (and easily overlooked) step to a mission in order to get the payout. I never bothered with the stock investments, because I assumed (wrongly, as it turned out) that the game wouldn't make me play stock broker in order to actually afford the properties.
