I don't get why they need everyone there commentating when someone is trying to run Tetris TGM of all games. Obviously it doesn't bother them that much, but during the rev run there were like four people talking, she was responding to some comments, all while trying to play one of the most difficult games.

Clearly they are a close community...but I would think if she could actually just focus on the game and not have a bunch of people talking to her she would've gotten further.

At least if it was me, I'd want like total silence. I get people talking during basically any other run, but this is one is like a constant barrage of "oh if I mess up once I blow the whole run".

Yeah, true.

It is really common to hear someone running a game though while talking, then have them go "oh hold on I actually need to focus here for a bit" when they get to a tough part. In TGM, the whole game is the tough part.

A lot of the streamers I watch know when they can/can't engage with chat, and I just can't imagine there is a good time to ever not be 100% focused on TGM. It just looks crazy to me. Even crazier when their focus is somewhere else, even if it is only slightly so.

like, little samson any% easy has a run that's 1 hour and 24 minutes long registered (and the runner describes the WR as being "10 minutes" at the time, so this isn't an early run that took place before all of the strats were discovered, either). calling that a "speedrun" is kinda insane >_>

My guess is that the moderators allow it if the runner expresses a desire to continue running the game and potentially climb the ladder. Of course, AutomaticJack posted that a year ago so I guess he never did get around to improving the time.

Are you suggesting that people say "no, you can't submit your run here, your time sucks"? It's a community leaderboard, the entire purpose is to allow anybody (of any skill level) to submit anything that they've played.

Each game has its own community which through mods regulate submissions. Most places don’t have time standards (Super Mario 64 120 Stars has someone with a time of over 16 hours, the WR is under 1:40) though some places do have arbitrary rules like all new submissions must only be behind by 20% of the world record’s time.

Personally I would accept any run as long as the person is actively trying to complete the objective. If it’s clear they are screwing around (like in SM64 they collect stars they already have) or they leave for a long period of time without justification and leave the clock running then I won’t accept them.

This makes sense to me

If someone can beat the game an hour slower then the others (but still hours faster then a casual run), who is it hurting to have sit at the bottom of some list.

that's not the case in the example i came up with, though - here the "run" is slower than a casual run. a casual run of little samson any% easy should take like 30-40 minutes.

I don't think enough people abuse those leaderboards in such a way to necessitate a sitewide rule like that. I could see scenarios where accomplished speedrunners could have wildly varying times, like someone just discovering a new skip that will end up justifying a separate category, but there isn't one yet.
