Sometimes. Some nights I'm just too lazy to get up to turn it off.

I legit don't remember the last time I restarted my personal laptop. Should probably do that. I just close the lid and it goes into sleep mode.

If I'm gone for work which means I'll be gone about 10 hours or so total. I shut my rig off.

When I'm sleeping I leave it on, as it's usually only 4 - 5 hours tops due to my sleep apnea.

Not really. Its set to automatically go into Hibernate mode in the early hours, do that it can continue to download during the night, then I switch in back on when I need to use it, which is usually after work.

This. Though I gotta wonder, with how fast SSD can boot up from cold, what reason is there to not shutdown? I know certain hardwares kinda go into a hibernate mode when not in use but I would not want my fans running 24/7 even if they cheap to replace.

Ah good point, I haven't torrented in ages but forgot about that. I'll admit, I have left my games/computer running a few times to farm stuff in the background (i.e. Factorio, Fable III, etc.)

I thought about setting up a NAS at home but I think this was one reason I hesitated about doing it. As convenient as it might be I do not think I would be remotely accessing my NAS often enough to justify setting it up.

That's BS, my last computer was 10 years old when I replaced it and the only reason I did was because the graphics card I was about to put in it had more Ghz then the processor on the motherboard.

Hell, my school has computers that are 30 years old that have never been shutdown.

That's BS,

Yeah, shutting it down nightly really doesn't make your PC not last as long.

I only shut my PC off after I play graphic intensive games cause my PC runs slow after I'm done. And even then I don't actually shut it down, I just restart it.

That's impressive and you had it on almost 24/7? I can see most of the hardware having some sort of sleep mode but even the fans lasted that long? I think the longest lasting hardware I had was a hard drive that went about seven years before starting having issues.

Yea, the big thing is you have to keep everything clean. What wears out fans is when they get caked in dirt and have to work twice as hard to spin. As long as they stay clean and can move freely they will last for a long time.

And yea, I tend to keep my computer on all the time, usually only turn it off if I go on vacation.

Are there any of you who leave it on just because you can? I feel like that's a startlingly common thing. I saw some explanations that made sense, like when running long downloads, but I also see some people whose attitude seems to boil down to "Why turn it off?" Well, why not turn it off? Do you also leave the lights on in other rooms in your house when you go to bed? I know lights turn on instantly and have one function, while a computer takes a little longer and does more things, but I think you get the idea - needless wasting of energy.

I did leave my work computer on most of the time, but that's because it started taking forever to boot up, and because I'd usually have a lot of programs and files open and I didn't want to have to re-open a bunch of stuff that I was still in the middle of working on every morning. Also, people there would needlessly leave on machines that consumed a lot more power, so I felt like the amount of energy I could save is such a small percentage of what the whole office used anyway.

Can just go ahead and get to what i want to be doing rather than waiting for it to turn on and load.

Why waste energy when it's unnecessary?

Why not just turn it on in the morning and then go make breakfast or brush your teeth or whatever while you wait? I'm sure you have something you can do unless you spend literally every waking second on the computer. And if you do spend that much time on it, I doubt that a couple minutes adds up to much lost productivity in a given day.
