Some might, but some might already have the game tucked away somewhere. Beyond that is a legal gray area meshed with a legal warzone meshed with egos from more sides than I care to bring into this conversation.

You can argue it's an ethical gray area, but it's not really a legal gray area. Personally, I don't really care if you already purchased the game, and I think that there is value to emulation. For example, TASes are good for entertainment value and even sometimes educational value with how people have used it to learn about the deeper workings of the game.

Since you both seem so keen on bringing up emulation, let me state something simple. Emulators, in and of themselves, are legal. HOWEVER, it is the actual roms and their distribution that is counted as illegal according to the DMCA. Look it up sometime.

Until then, the rest of us will be sticking with you know.

i said emulation, not emulators.

you literally proved both of us right, though, in that emulation is illegal and not a gray area.

and to be fair, unless you dumped the BIOS for the emulator yourself, it's illegal.

hell, even being able to get the bios from your own console is illegal.

Is it like a status symbol for gamers to have one of these in their home?

Is it just to show any friends that they have this limited system?

Because for that..... I'd prefer they keep the hardware and I'd just you know.

Well if Nintendo was smart they would make more of them, showing that people are willing to pay like $150-200 for a new NES mini, and Nintendo compounds this problem by only producing the console for a short period of time.

Apparently Nintendo wants the scalpers to easily make bank on these things.

Remember: Nintendo is in the trading business--has been since the end of the 19th century--first and the game development business as a means to an end. Their apparent love for games or the fans is a facade.

Trading?

Yes, trade. From playing cards in 1889, to gaming systems ranging between 1979 and the present, and all of their trade policies since that fateful February 1889 when they formed. Everything they say and do is to promote trade so they can see profit.

Edit: Also toys in the 1960s.

It is a way to encourage their fans to make immediate purchases out of fear of higher prices later.

I mean, can you really say you're not going to be preordering this thing day 1 after what they pulled with the last one?

Think about it this way - if you knew something was always going to be available, any time of the day... it kind of diminishes your urgency to buy it, right?

I think it's an outdated policy, like waaay outdated and mostly in response to the overproduction of the early 1980's that hasn't been a threat in decades. But I can see the merit of acting in this counter-intuitive way for building brand value, on occasion. But at this point Nintendo has a pretty high established brand value (especially in comparison with how small the company really is) and they don't have to keep pulling stunts like this.

You could compare it to Amiibo the difference is they brought back the Amiibos that were vastly under-produced and that helped those get them later. Meanwhile with the NES mini they are just like hmm, lets announce this final shipment letting all the scalpers know that we will never make another one.

If anything the best way to do this type of strategy is VASTLY under-ship the first 1-2 shipments then 2-3 months later ship the fuck out of it. That way everyone overreacts to how hard it is to get in the first 1 or 2 shipments and then when the 3rd comes on like a tidal wave everyone buys it since they missed out before. Sony somewhat did this with the PS2 where the console was hard as hell to find for the first 4-6 months of its life cycle but then 1 year later or so they were readily available.

They sometimes do that. Sometimes they don't. They don't really carry a specific strategy with it. The only reliable thing they will do is really short supply upon first release.

The only Nintendo product I can think of in the last 5-10 years that they really over-produced it was Metroid Other M. They miscalculated so badly on that that they ended up selling copies for a dollar.

Couldn't vote in poll. Too many games that were influential to my childhood. Desperately needed an "all of the above" one. Hopefully this comes with Some of the killer SNES RPGS. Chrono Trigger, FF 2 & 3 (Or 4 and 6) andwhy not include some more obscure titles. NBA Jam, Ogre Battle, River City Ransom, Actraiser. just too many titles to count. And if they don't put Megaman X on it... there'd be hell to pay! Kidding.

Eh, the problem with the poll is that I pretty much already own all of the options.

As for the things you listed, you need to remember that Nintendo may not necessarily want to pay 3rd parties for their content so that'll be a bit slimmer. Plus RCR was the NES, wasn't it?
